Starting up a VPS Host

What would be some of your ideas to starting a new VPS Host.

We have the servers and software. Just wanted to know some you ideas about it.

I will release the name later.

Our Ideas are to offer Linux, Hybrid and Windows VPS. We also have some other services we are going to have.

Any Ideas are appreciated.

We started VPS hosting this year, and are still learning so many things. Make sure your pricing is right on this market.

Well, Good Luck!!

I actually won't agree on the pricing. I don't believe its the main selling point here. There are hundreds of VPS providers out there, outperforming each other on the price level... yet most popular companies like SoftLayer, KnownHost (example) are not exactly the cheapest.

Price isn't everything - service is.

I'd like to think that I know what I'm talking about when it comes to VPS hosting. I started VPS hosting back in 2006 and I'd be lying if I said I get it perfect back then. Although things have changed in the last few years I'd suggest you take it slow..

Artashes, I'm going to have to disagree with you. SoftLayer, HostGator, etc. have not gone to the VPS market. They went to cloud hosting which is a much different type of client base.

The VPS market two years ago was a lot more profitable then what it has become today. I have seen hosting comapnies/datacenters that I consult for who do anywhere between a couple hundred thousand to a couple hundred million stay clear of the new vps market.

With items like HyperVM and OpenVz it has greatly saturated the market. It has caused some major palyers stay clear because they saw the market heading where the shared market already did.

Now I'll be happy to give you my industry perdiction. The hybrid's are going to become extremely hot and from a profitability standpoint, a company cannot beat them with the proper business model.

We used to have our own equipment for VPS Hosting years ago, and it was, as Zach said, profitable back then. These days however, it's more profitable (for us) to lease the equipment through other places. We depends on KH a lot for VPS services and really couldn't be happier.

Zach, when you talk of Hybrids, can you expand on your interpretation of this a little bit? There are some places that believe a hybrid is just scaled back shared hosting (only allowing 10-20 users on a single machine), and there are others that believe it's still in the VPS family, or a combination of VPS and Cloud.

We've been doing shared hosting for the past 8 years with limits of only 10-12 accounts on a single machine. Still no SSH access for the user, but it lends itself perfectly to ecommerce and performance sites not ready to take the plunge into dedicated servers.

Just wondering what your take is on the wording of "hybrid".

I think Zach is talking Hybrid VPS which will dedicate some of the Dedicated on the box to your VPS. Still newer, but its coming. I think VPS is good, Depends on what you offer because its the first step for running your server.

Thanks guys for the info.

Get a good name for yourself, Offer good support on the VPS and offer a ton of OSs also Use HyperVm

NONONONONO Do not use hyperVM I used to use it and the program fails. And this isnt just from me you can ask the majority of other people and they'll say the same thing. Use solusVM it's very reliable and the support is quick and proffesional. :). I suppose you could use HyperVM if you wanted to offer super super cheap VM's but personally id pay the $10/mo/node fee for SolusVM :P

- Many Thanks,

Look at the value you are trying to portray and price accordingly. It is a fragmented market so be cautious about entering it and make sure you are picking the right platform. Hardest thing to do is switch platforms since there are always problems happening with the switch.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

I feel that since we started to offer VPS's we have started to make more of a profit, we have also had more VPS sign ups than anything else now.
