Standing Out

What are you doing to distinguish your business from other hosting businesses? It seems that the variables are price, packages and service, but everyone is competing intensely on those things. How do you make hosting profitable?

Provide excellent service.
The turn over rate in hosting clients is huge.
Getting new sign ups without a huge advertising budget is hit and miss.
The solution: Keep the customers you do sign up with outstanding service and a stable network.

The more happy, long term customers, the more word of mouth business is generated.

Well I would have to agree with Blue on this.

Advertiseing in expensive and you really have no way of knowning what the return on the dollar will be.

But once you aquire clients then giving them all you can is the key to getting more. One bad support issue will cost you 5 new clients. ( the 1 you lost plus the 2 that he told plus the one person each of those told)

But one happy client over the years can bring in 10's of new clients.

So I would say customer support and added packages (like compileing special perl modules or scripting tools like Ruby)

Good up time.

BTW Howdy Yall I am new here...........

Never get into a price war with other hosts, you need to know how low you can go on your pricing before it stops being worth it financially.

Treat every customer you have like you did your first, customer service is what sets most hosts apart.

Service, service, and service....oh, and service. :)

I cannot stress the above enough for any host. The single most important fact for any company is the level of service. You must work hard at it and not be afraid to occasionally go the extra mile. A clients good word is invaluable for a company and will generate word of mouth clients that will in turn do the very same. It's absolutely key to maintain strong service, the cheapest hosting in the universe won't make up for crappy service.

A great point here. Way too often, host get bogged down in price wars that can cause huge problems for the hosts and their clients. Slashing prices down to the point where you're making next to nothing isn't good for anyone save your competition - sooner or later you will be out of business. Stick to your business plan.

Service -- excellent service will lead to a lot of referrals. Having a genuine interest vested in each and every single one of your clients is the key.

And I agree with what everyone else has to say about price. Never sacrifice price for quality service. Charge what you deserve for the work that you do. Web hosts working on a tight margin will eliminate themselves from the marketplace.
