Splash Screens : Good or bad ?

The theory behind splash screens is that they can set the stage for the home page by showing some kind of welcome message or possibly simply the name or logo in isolation without the distractions of the navigation elements on the home page proper.

I think, splash screens are annoying and users click off them as fast as they can. Any positive words for splash screens ?

It is much better to design a single home page that unifies the situational identity message with a display of some useful news and directory information. Content itself can be used to tell users where they are and what the site is about.

Unless the flash is extremely good and in context... it is considered a waste of time by the visitors and most of them do click on the skip button to go through to the main page.

I do not see the advantage of having such a page if it does not add any value to your website. If it is a website for animation or creative graphics, then showcasing them initially through a flash animation would be a good idea, in that case you have an audience who is interested in seeing your talents and would therefore prefer to watch the whole thing before proceeding further.

Individuals use splash pages as a means of advertising. Splash pages are usually very attractive in appearance, but they often lack content relevant to search engines.

They often lack content relevant to an interested viewer.
When i see a flash intro loading, i think, so why did they need to dress up this site?
invariably the result of the load and the page beyond is so much less than you want.
focus on what the impact should be of the intro.
Spread a message? inform? Introduce products?
Very few of these goals are fully met at the moving picture level.

However, i may just use a flash intro on a new page selling jewlery. The flash can very quickly get the line in front of the viewers eyeballs then they know what category to click to learn more.

Greetings,
Personally, I only display "Splash Pages" if I am running a special, so its the first thing customers see when they enter my site. I also use them if I recently added a new feature or service and would like for my vistors to be aware of it :).

As far as clicking through them go, I have all of mine re-direct after 10 seconds...

Cheers,
-- Tim
