Specialist Blog Hosting, or General

If you were looking to host a blog, and nothing else on that domain, would you go for one of the companies that only host blogs and that are semi set up with templates and so on? Or would you just go for your own hosting and set it all up yourself?

For me, personally, I would go for the "anything" web host because I know how to install software myself, and I might want to do something else with the space later.

If I were just getting onto the Internet today and didn't know any better, I might not realize that I could install my own scripts on one of the general hosting web sites, and so I might go for one of the "blog" hosting sites. There's always the chance, though, that if I ever wanted to do anything else, I might go with a different hosting company - one specializing in "that" service. (Or maybe not. I don't know.)

A lot of web hosting companies including myself offer fantastico for its one-click installation easy for new combers to the internet to use. Fantastico also offer blog software like wordpress, b2evolution, Nucleus.

yeah, Fantastico helps out a lot to new comers on the web. I offer it, and I think every host should offer it. This would widen your client base. This way, you would get clients ranging from experienced to new comers.

Any kind of host can offer Fantastico, though: either a general host, or a blog-specific host (set up with templates, et al.) I think the OP was looking for other information.

Well a blog such as wordpress can easily be managed and you have ultimate control of the functionality and addons when hosting it yourself.

With blog only hosting (example is wordpress.com), you do not have to manage it on your own such as keeping the actual blog software updated for security fixes. Additionally, if a problem arises, there are techs there who are already trained on how to handle the issue.

I would recommend self hosted as eventually you will have the need to add on a forum, make custom modifications, or maybe install some other scripts.

Exactly, another one for an anything host. Find the host you want to host with, and more than likely they will have the capabilities to handle your blog.

I'm actually going against the grain on this one. If you're only going to be hosting a blog, and you already have a host that specaliazes on blogs only, then I'd set one up with them. If you don't need all the features of the other hosting company, why pay for them?

The advantage with the Blog Only host is that you can probably pick it up cheaper, and hopefully they've optimized the server for that particular blog software. Again, going into a specality market for a blog would mean you're not paying for other featuers that hosts offer.

If however the price is the same, then why not get everything rather than be locked in ;)

If you only need blog and nothing else. I think it will be better to choose blog only host or hosted blog service. The reason is because the provider is hand-to-hand every day with blog and nothing else, so you will be in good hand. Also the prices usually cheaper, since they only provide blog, nothing else.

You could try wordpress.com and use their custom domain add-on feature, it is only $10/year and you will have your own blog under your own domain name. Every technical things will be handled by wordpress. :)

I already have a forum, and other site features set up elsewhere and hadn't considered adding a forum to this ever. It might be a possibilty but honestly, I've been there, done that, I'm not sure I want to manage another one.

I have other hosting elsewhere too, I just don't want to spend a lot of money on this and am looking for flexibility whilst being cheap-and yes I have the no how to deal with installing for myself.

Part of this is my exploring just what the purpose of a blog host is-whether it is mostly for those who do not have the know how or whether it serves another purpose.

Most times, it's for ease of use and technical knowledge.

Us for example, we know X-Cart inside and out. All our staff are trained on it, and we can answer pretty much any question off the top of our heads for a client. Of course, getting into the programming end of it is a different story and we refer customers to programmers for that. The same would be with a place that only hosted wordpress for example. If all they do is live and breath wordpress, when you have a question, you should have a quick answer.

Many of the specalty hosts will also optimize their server for the specific software. Some hosts will host the blog software and maintain software updates etc, leaving you to ONLY worry about content. This can be a HUGE plus for someone that knows nothing (and want's to know nothing) about the blogging software.

I would imagine though that even for someone that has some knowledge and understanding, that using a service like this would be way quicker, much less hassle. And so if you are prolific writer and just want to get on with it, that this might be easier?

It would depend a lot on the individual doing the buying.

I host several authors (some with a few books under their belts, a few who've just published their first Dead Tree Edition book) and I don't offer any "specialty" hosting. It's all general. The site does specifically mention that people can host blogs with my service - but that isn't all I host.

I can't tell you about the thought processes of those who have chosen a specific "blog" host, though. Sorry!!

Books I think would be different than the bloggers out there.

If I was only doing blogging all day, and didn't want to think about upgrading software or dealing with securities etc - in a heart beat I'd be hosting with a host that offered blog services, but also updated the blog software (as many blog specific hosts would).

Like Lesli, most of us are hosting in general population and not blog specific (although we do offer blogging software).

I guess it'll come down to the individual at the end of the day. I know for me, I can change the oil on my car (and spend a hour doing it), but I get the guy at the local JiffyLube to do it in 10 mintues and $20! For me, money well spent!

way quicker, much less hassle is contacting your first forum host..
may be they provide you with something you need now.

It might be normal as start up of your blog within a limited feature but you may find it difficult to manage when the traffic level start increasing in future.

I think it would really depend on what my goals with the blog were, and how much freedom that specific host were to offer me. Pricing is another important part, but certainly not all of it either. A blog host such as Blogspot is honestly pretty good for most beginning bloggers, especially if you don't have that high of goals or expectations.

There is nothing called as blog hosting and all its just marketing gimmicks boss.

Any server with Cpanel will do this for you, you can easily install if you need automated installs or a simple linux server will do this

Yes, but some people are just looking for a free and simple host for blog, and blogspot.com does that job just fine, and while all hosts can indeed host blogs, some people just prefer the simplicity of a place such as blogspot, especially when they are new to blogging and want to see how it does. Also, blogspot is free and provides all of the tools that many bloggers would care about. Everyone is different, and has different requirements and goals.

I would definitely look for my own hosting and set it all up myself. I like having complete control over my setup, it also creates a great learning experience if its something new to you
