Some web hosting questions

Hey!
I'm currently working on a couple of videos tutorial for a 3D modeling tool. I want to open a website which will host these videos and possibly some other related things as well. The idea right now is to have several shorter clips available for free streaming on the web site and a full download for a yet to be determined price.

The videos sizes will be quite large- ranging between 500mb-1GB each. If I want to make them available in one file the file size will obviously be even larger.

I'm quite new to the web hosting world so my questions are as followed:

1. Are web hosts sufficient for my needs (file hosting of large files, selling the video files online using paypal, streaming video etc.)
2. If the above answer is yes, what web host would best suit my needs? I understand that Blue Host and Host Monster are good. Anyone have any experience?
3. Would the desired process of selling the large file be complicated either for me to set up or for the consumer to download?

I'm going to get someone to help me set up the web site once I'm ready for it, unless I manage to pick it up on my own but I'll cross that bridge when I reach it.

Thanks in advance!

Since your files are too large it may be difficult for a host to put you on a shared server. You may wish to get a VPS (Virtual prive server)

Sorry for double posting, I couldn't edit my message cause half an hour passed since I posted it.

I looked into VPS but that just confused me even more. Look at Starlogic for example. On their homepage they promote 3 different deals. Looking at the ProLogic and VPSLogic I would think that Pro is better than VPS. For instance, they say they provide unlimited GB storage and transfer whereas the VPS deal provides only 20GB of storage and 1TB of transfer and for a greater price (30$ per month vs 6$ Per month).
I take it that storage space means how much I can upload and transfer means data transfer which would be used for downloading those files.

I understand there must be a difference between the two which justifies the price gap...I was wondering if that could be explained to me.

Thanks

Please allow me to answer our questions.

1. Web hosting is always sufficient to meet your requirements, but you have to select the hosting plans that can match your requirements. Since you require a video streaming website, certainly a simple, cheap hosting plan would not be suitable for you as you will experience delay, slowness and downtime on your site. Why? That's because if you select the cheapest plan, you are sharing the resources with so many clients. It will create bottleneck on the server and eventually, your website will suffer from the three symptoms above.

To overcome this problem, you need to consider a VPS or a Semi-Dedicated or even a Dedicated Server. We have a various range of servers that you can choose from and please have a look at: http://www.asphostcentral.com/semidedicatedhosting.aspx and http://www.asphostcentral.com/DedicatedServerHosting.ASPX. If you like a cheaper, yet powerful, high-performance shared hosting plan, you may consider our Enterprise Plan (which will cost you only $40.00/month) - http://www.asphostcentral.com/ASPNETPlans.aspx

2. I would love to recommend our service to you based on the reasons elaborated on point 1. We have various hosting packages that you can choose from and please feel free to drop any questions if you like via our website.

3. I do not think it is a complicated process. In fact, it is a simple process which requires one-setup and you can use it for the rest. We are happy to set everything up for you if you like (free of charge) and we will make sure that everything is perfectly working!

Regarding the web hoster, which can offer you so-called "unlimited banwidth or unlimited disk space", you have to be aware of it. Even the sky has limit and there is no such thing like a so-called "unlimited banwidth or unlimited disk space". If you want to buy a PC and if you go to a computer shop, will you be able to ask the shopkeeper that you want to buy an unlimited hard drive? No, isn't it? My recommendations to you is that:

1. Please work out your monthly budget
2. Please determine the required disk space and bandwidth (you may add some buffers into it, in case you do not want to exceed the quota)

In my point of view, it is useless and worthless to pay for the cheap service just to see your site down frequently in a day. If you want a very cheap service, there are tons of companies out there who can offer a service at a rate of 99 cents a monthh ONLY. The question is that: Are they reliable? How's their server? How's the connection speed?

It is a LOT better to spend a little bit more for a hosting service just to know that you are comfortable with the level of service. Btw, hosting fee is cheap nowadays. For example, our hosting plan starts at $4.99/month or 18 cents a day. What can you buy with 18 cents nowadays?

Hope this will give you a good insight in selecting the hosting package. Good Luck!

Looks like you on your start right away. Well in this case I would recommend you start with shared windows web hosting like webhostgiant.com or discountasp.net. I believe they are the best to start. Then go to the VPS jodhosting.com offers one of the best VPS for windows. I think that it will be right way of your growing.

Thanks for the replies! I highly appreciate it!

I think it'll take make a least a week if not more to get the videos complete. I'm also going to compress these files into one installer file so the file size required shouldn't be as high as I first predicted. Say altogether 500MB-1GB for the one single file with all the videos.

You guys gave me the initial direction as to how large the file uploaded should be and what server would best suit my needs. I think the best thing now is to complete the video so I know exactly what needs to be done before I actually make the choice.

It seems that you don't know too much about VPS's. It would be highly recommended then to get a managed VPS so that you have someone to always update your VPS as well as secure it for you :).

Hai,

Web Hosting is not a complicated thing, but first you must look the following.

1. Your budget for doing all this?
2. Your requirements. ie: Bandwidth you required, Storage etc..

Please check the following. It will provide the solutions to your requirements.
