Software for Design

What software do you know of that is free which could be used to design banners, logos, templates and the likes? I know there is Gimp but what others do you know of and how complex are they? Are there any you recommend for someone who is very new to design work?
 
I'm sorry but I'll state the obvious. Beginner or not if you want to get serious with design you either need Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Fireworks to do something like that. You can also consider Corel's programs Draw and Paint Shop Pro.
 
So basically spend the big bucks and get the Adobe Photoshop that is ever so popular? I'm assuming it is the best by far. Do any of you have a discount place to purchase or shall I just buy on Adobe site?
 
Well, to buy it online is the most convenient way as far as I'm concerned. You can search for a retailer but I don't believe you will find it for any less price.
 
I would try the normal big places for looking for discounts-see if Amazon has it, or one of the Ebay stores. Not a personal seller, but a store that just has an ebay storefront to sell through.

Its a good way to go for sure, you won't get Gimp doing the professional stuff I wouldn't think, though some people claim wonderful results.
 
I've tested Gimp and used it some and though I'm sure you could do some nice things it just isn't working for me I just can't make it do what I want it to and I hear its just so much easier with Adobe so I suppose I'll invest whenever I get the money.

For a beginner adobe photoshop and corel draw are not easy to use.Lots of software are available for the said purpose. I use GBlogo. This is very simple and easy to use.

Through this post i also got to know about some new softwares. Thanks for that. If you want to go for a company which could do all the work for you then i know one company i.e submitshop. It will provide you with good deals. Do check for that.

I don't think Corel DRAW is hard. My first designs were done in it and those were very easy. Back then I had no clue about designing software and still I managed to do some good work.
 
Adobe Suit has done many wonders for me in the world of web development. Many top-notch web designers find themselves using the same software. If so many people are using it, that should say for itself just how powerful it can be when it comes to web design/web development.

Hi Lisa thanks for the reply. Can you tell me about GBlogo? What company produces that software and is it freeware or is it licensed? I've never heard of that and yes, I've been told that Photoshop is somewhat difficult to learn however I've never heard that on Corel Draw.
 
It sounds like you want to move beyond basic design, so I also recommend Adobe's suite of design software.
 
So I would suppose majority rules on this eh? :) Thank you all so much, now do any of you all have any recommendations on websites with tutorials or beginner tips? I'd love to start taking notes while I'm raising the funds for the purchase.
 
With over 27 million results on Google for Photoshop tips, you could spend the rest of you life just reading tips. There are so many great sites, but I like video tutorials like this.
 
LOL which is exactly why I was looking for someone who actually has used some of them, because I never know which ones are up to date etc when it comes to widely known software. Thanks for the link that is really a nice one!
 
I guess gimp is the next best alternative to photoshop.

You may download their trial version and use it for a month I think then decide if you really need it or you really want free... :)

How is GIMP really, though? I gave it a quick test run a year or so ago but it didn't suit me as well as Photoshop. On the other hand I'm no graphic designer, just a photo resizer and editor for the most part, so I've wondered since if my initial thoughts on GIMP were correct.

Any opinions appreciated :)
 
I've never extensively tested GIMP but first impressions are great.

Though if you want a software that is similar to Photoshop, you can try Paint.NET: http://www.getpaint.net/ It looks a lot like photoshop and a lot of the functions are similar to photoshop's.
 
To tell you the truth I use a keygen for CS4 and Its not fun not saying to use one but its worth buying Adobe CS4 for logos and psds and more. Photoshop Cs4 its called.
 
I stick with PS for the most part but have reinstalled GIMP and will test with high hopes :) I'll also look into Paint.NET, thanks for the tips!
