Hi All

I just found the below thread on WHT, i dont know if i should laugh or cry

Internet Shutdown? Seriously?
I was doing my thing ... you know surfing the internet, roaming WHT, and so on then I receive a message from a friend to check out this video. Mind you, I don't watch TV so I obviously have not seen the news. Apparently, the internet is being shutdown on July 9th, 2012 by the FBI which, for me, is tomorrow. Seriously? Is this a joke?

See the News Video here

This so happens to be around the same time that ISP's will have implemented "policing" copyright on the internet which was to begin on July 1st, 2012.

The article on that here

I found this video on YouTube that points out a lot of discrepancies that I found interesting.

Your thoughts?

Oh, I believe it will happen, but maybe not on the scale envisioned. I did go to the FBI's site and tested my PC's which were all clean.

I hope it wouldn't happen, though in the name of law, it seems that FBI can do anything they want. I am with the idea of fighting illegal download on the internet though.

Hmm - Seems people really have either been given the wrong end of the stick, or cannot read.

I read on the BBC site - It is just infected pc's, it's not really an internet shutdown.
It's just a case of DNS servers shut down + the botnets that control all these + the infect pc's.

exactly thats why i used the header "should we laugh or cry FBI Internet Shutdown? "
does not bother me as my PCs are clean, just thought it was a good laughable item to bring on here

The Internet is global and connot be controlled this way nor should it. I think a lot of this is down to the extreemly rapid growth of the internet over the last 10-15 years. Lets be honest, not many people predicted the impact that the internet would have on our daily lives and more so what services and information could be acessed via it in all corners of the globe.

All parties were underprepared for the internet age and have spent the last few years trying to catch up and putting reactive measures in place etc.

Its call Marketing or SEO... FBI Self Advertisement.. :D

Mayan Calendar: World will destroy in 2012..
FBI: Internet shutdown :rolleyes2

I call it funny seeing as today is the 10th and I knew nothing about it until I just read this thread. There are so many funny but fake things on the web I wonder what the ratio is of that compared to the real stuff.

On July 9, one of the nodes that I was on started to receive massive DDoS-like DNS requests, which crippled my VMWare VPS. The host suspended the abuser after it was located. I still wonder if it was related to the July 9 DNS issue, or simply coincidence. It had never happened before.

Strange. :shaky:

The internet can easily be controlled exactly like this :p

If your system was infected, then you were being redirected to hacked dns servers. Those have been turned off - so anyone still infected *WILL* have lost the ability to resolve domains - effectively getting "cut off"
