Setting up your own web hosting service?

Hello all,

I'm currently trying to setup a personal web hosting service for my friends where they get an area of web space, etc, for them to use. Basically, a free web hosting service, etc with PHP, and all possible.

Does anyone know how I could go about setting this service up? ( If I were to get a HostGator/webspace account, etc)

Since you had already sign up, you don't need to do anything,.

What you need to do is to upload your detail to the web that your want let the people view of it.
 
Most web hosts will not allow you to provide free web hosting from the space that you've purchased from them. Hence, please check with them before signing up.
 
Reseller/Dedi

You would need a reseller account, Virtual Private Server, or Dedicated Server. These do not come cheap for most companies so if you know exactly what you are going to do then go ahead if your a little fuzzy then think about it a little more.

I would like to see the stats on that.

Why wouldn't a host allow you to offer free hosting on a reseller account?
Your resources are limited regardless of whether or not they are free or paid so why would a host care and why would they limit what their resellers do with their own resources that they paid for as long as they are legal?

If that is reseller account - why not as you are allowed to do whatebever you want. But on shared web hosting you are not allowed to resell even give free web hosting. As rule on free web hosting not really good stuff is hosted

Indeed, I've seen hosts ending up banning free hosting for their resellers due to the amount of problems that such end users caused. I guess it's a matter of anonymity and lack of effective coercion methods, bringing out the worst in people.

Clients can only send as many emails as the host chooses.
I have clients who sends thousands of emails. I don't limit them unless I get complaints of spam.
I don't see why that should be any different with free accounts.

True, but even if you only allow 50 emails per email address, times the hundreds of accounts, you can end up with a decent number of spam emails sent per day. A couple of reports is all it takes to get a blacklisting, that will affect tens of resellers on the server.

Further more, spam is not the only problem that can arise. scams, phishing, copyright infringements, hack attempts, can all part of the free hosting game. Some hosts had enough of these to outright ban free hosting, but experiences can certainly vary, and other hosts may not have an issue with it.

Nevertheless, one must read the TOS carefully, and keep in mind that it can also change in time.
