Read the forums with hundreds of posts on how to do the tasks that you need.

That's probably the best #1 tip out there - read what others have done, find out what they did wrong, dont' do that.

Check the date on postings - any "tricks" or "tactics" that were produce in 2011 or before - I'd be skeptical of trying them. Since the latest updates in the past year especially, the old "tricks" do not work. Besides, it's not nice to trick the search engine (and clients) into things.
 
That's certainly a tall order to always be on ranked at the top. I like your lofty goal, but I don't know if it's necessarily reasonable. Regardless, here are a few tips:

-Use your keyword in your title tag
-Use the keyword in the header of your page
-Use the keyword in the content of your page
-Name your images those keywords
-Submit your site to relevant directories
-Try guest blogging
 
Share your all pages into top social networks and social bookmarking sites. Search engines give the important for social site backlinks also.
 
The more you read the better you know. Another good thing is to make sure you are spelling correctly. I can not count the number of times clients have asked us for our opinion of why they get visits but no stays, many people have random typo's in their major keywords. :disagree:
 
Reading what others have posted is probably the finest SEO tip to mention in here since there is no magical formula to tell that will push a web position to the top of Google. SEO sometimes makes even gurus very puzzled, especially after the recent major updates by Google. One cool idea is to think long term, since there are no shortcuts whatsoever to follow and take when you wet your feet in the SEO world.
 
One of the tips I tend to share alot is the tip of staying up to date with the industry. Something you learned last year may not be relevant and may even do harm to your website.

Since SEO is in a constant state of flux, no TIP will guarantee you'll be on the top of rankings forever. The key word is VALUE - always strive to provide real (relevant) value to your prospects, clients and viewers. Beyond that, you need to stay current (and compliant) with industry guidelines. How do you do that? You read every (current) article posted out there - on blogs, SEO forums AND by the search engines themselves.
 
Information, good quality content, updated content, etc things that will make people want to visit (and link!) your site will help your rankings too.
 
On of my SEO tips for you is that you use orignal or unique content and then use relevant backlinks and delete those who are not. Use normal link building strategy like using normal anchors like click here, visit my site etc.
