I was wondering if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction as far as getting into the realm of SEO work.

What would one do to improve upon SEO?

Any help / tips would be greatly appreciated!!

First of all do some analysis work on competitor's backlinks. Target some specific keywords and do hard work to get a good SERP position. I am not so expert in this area, but I think you can start with basic SEO methods such as directory submission, article posting, blog comments, social bookmarking, active participation on social media sites, guest blogging, not to mention forums, etc … And don't forget to integrate a knowledge base blog on your website.

First thing you must do is to plan your campaign by researching the proper keyword for your website. Then, optimize your website according to your chosen keyword. then you go to off site optimization.

Content always is king! Make sure you have content that is descriptive and human readable (don't try to just pack keywords in there). Also make sure you submit your sitemap to Google, that will help get you indexed faster.

Speaking of indexing, I have also found that the older the domain name the faster google indexes the site. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Longevity definitely plays into Google's algorithms, but what I've repeatedly noticed are links to articles listed in the top five search results that are so old, they're not relevant anymore.

You can find some really good articles on SEO at WDTalk (check the SEO section), I believe it's Steve's blog or Hostirian's blog (I forget :().. Anyhow I always find something interesting and useful to read there. :D

The best way to start id fir do competitor analysis. Check from where their backlinks are coming and what keywords they are targeting. Do a deep analysis as it the important part.

Once its done try to get backlink from where they are getting if possible. Do onpage optimization for your site. Do offpage optimization like bookmarking , article submission, forums and blog posting and all. There are many thing but you have to choose what you have to use.

There are many factors which affect search engine optimization:-

Like domain age, how fast if your website, properly coded, seo urls , caconical urls , brroken links and all.

Always keep all the factors in mind and get it started.

What not to do:-

Sometime when people starts with search engine optimization they start posting on different forums and blog about their service and spam the board. This is a big disadvantage for your site and now a days you will see forums and blogs are no follow which makes spamming useless.

Always post comments which can be helpful for others and search engine will also give your site importance.

Never post n irrelevant sites like usually people do in seo that they start posting a web development service in a music forum. There is no use for that its also called as spamming only.

So make a brief plan and they start the optimization procedure..:)

you can search out lots of seo tips from the web, but please keep in mind you have to take actions and continue with the valuable ideas in order to get good result.

You can look and find a ton of SEO tips on the web and in particular on the forums. The most important thing to know about SEO in my opinion is that it takes tons of time. If you have the funding then hire a firm. If you want to improve then you need to read everything you can find and also look at what the SEO firms are offering to their own clients and educate yourself. Apply what you learn to your own sites and see how it improves, helps or hurts your own results and ranking.

Do the following:

On Page Optimization

Keyword research,
Keyword in title, description, body
Headings-H1, H2 etc.,
Keyword in domain name.
Keywords in meta tags etc.,

Off page optimization

Link Building
Submit website to Google, yahoo, Bing, DMOZ
Article Submission
Blog posting
forum posting
web 2.0 links
video links
.edu, .gov website back links
etc.,

First of all do a site analysis, do check broken links, and work on url redirect. please check all url, and do on page for them and decide specific primary and secondary keyword. Use that keyword in meta tags. then you can start with Off-page seo.

For a newbie, its better to understand the tactics of SEO.There are two types of SEO.On page SEO and Off page SEO.On page SEO involves optimizing your site content and researching targeted keywords.Off page SEO involves building back links by using some link building strategies like blog commenting, forum posting, social book marking, directory submission and article submission.
