Self-Hosting Websites, Email?

I am sick and tired of all the cheesy web hosting companies with downtime, or going belly-up with zero notice, or having their main IP gray-listed for spamming. It's time I self-hosted my websites and email.

I made a first attempt at this by setting to my domain registrar's DNS and redirecting from them to my Clearwire dynamic IP, but after 36 hours I was still not resolving. I now find that they block incoming port 25 & 80, and will not open it under any circumstances, so am looking for some other solution. No idea what to do here. I'm in Seattle and Qwest is not available, but Comcast is as much as I hate them.

I also tried to set up my mailserver by following the Debian manual for Exim, but soon discovered that Exim is -not- all there is to it. I ended up using a HowTo on howtoforge to also set up Cyrus, SpamAssassin, etc, but when I came to a crucial juncture the Cyrus driver was not loading into Exim, or someutt. No idea what was wrong.

So after 4 days of my 4 business websites being down I crapped out and went with Maxiehost as hoster, only to discover after a few days that 80% of my emails were being held and not delivered, for a graylisted IP. So I fired them and went with 2IP. After 12 hours I am still not getting resolution of my domains, and I still think it is time to self-host.

Has anyone done this from a home internet provider?

Bad idea.

Do your research and find a good host. There are many, many very good hosts out there that you won't have these problems with.

If you are sick of "cheesy" web hosts than stop trying to host your site with them.

Find a decent host. Perhaps you need to raise your monthly payment a little.

Thanks to all those replying who have an agenda. :rolleyes2

I am really asking those who are/were in the same situation as I.

Quantum,

there are a lot of people unfortunately who are or have been in a similar situation and who have lost data, money and effort with some hosts over similar issues. But as said and as everyone here is likely to say, you get what you pay for as any product/service (by no means go for the most expensive) but compare multiple hosts and preen HD and other forums for reviews and critiques like your own :)

Hosts like you describe are giving the industry a sleazy reputation. There are many good hosts out there, who are honest, and work hard to please you. Don't overlook them because of a few bad apples.

2IP has now been down for days --my sites never made it up with them-- and has sent regular emails claiming that they are being viciously attacked by hackers 'for their faith-based beliefs'.

Yeah, sure. Just typical downtime.

So I've fired them and will have to fight for my $25 refund. Hired yet another company, this time a more expensive one that offers a custom package which I can a la cart to my target price. Why no welcome email for 24 hours? I can't build my sites.

This is intolerable.

You seem quite rude.
Perhaps it's not the hosts that are the problem.

You come here looking for help and it was offered and you cry that we have an agenda.
An ingracious attitude like that is in my book is intolerable.

You'll notice that 1) Blue didn't use his signature in his post and 2) he's a community advisor that has dedicated himself to HD for many years. And, you'll notice that I don't/can't own a hosting company. So, there's really no hidden agenda. We're just here to help you have a more positive hosting experience.

Of course, many businesses have tried this. Was it the smart thing to do? Absolutely not. Not all hosts are sleasy. You can find any number of credible hosts right here on this forum with a little effort. Look, there are just too many issues running any business site from a home internet provider - first, most ISP's won't allow it. Then there's a power redundancy issue, bandwidth concerns, cooling issues and on and on. Would I run any business off my Charter Cable home connection - even if I could, I wouldn't. I've gone for weeks at a time without a connection at home because of their support schedules.

You also have to remember that if your ISP discovers you are hosting websites from your home account, they could suspend your account.

As others have pointed out, do a some research to find the best hosts out there. There are plenty of comparison sites out there as well. Don't fall for the testamonies either, they could be faked. Ask people directly if they have actually used that host and their experiences.
