neither to say i cut of the chat and blocked his IP as he wants to pay $200 for a VPS with 'Full space and bandwidth' whatever that is, which all sound a bit vague to me
 
Does look fishy, and the IP is listed in project honeypot - however, not sure the posting of the conversation and his IP address here is exactly DPA compliant ;)

The IP etc, does not identify him, so nothing against DPA. The IP is a general dynamic IP belonging to BSES TeleCom Limited , so is used by thousands of users and no full name or other ID to identify him and i dare say he would not use his real name anyway.

yes this i figured out, that the main reason i posted so others are aware.

his chat is full of holes
1) if he had been on our site he would see we dont offer VPS or dedicated servers.
2) he wanted a server with full space and bandwidth ( could not give me exact figures)
3) was going to give me $200 a month for something i dont offer

the logs dont show him every visiting any pages of my site, he just opened live chat, if he was testing support then surely you would look at the site/company to see what they offered in the first place, not just go to chat and saying you want a VPS with a company that does not offer them and not even giving the company any information to even quote for one if i did offer them.

gives no information, which even testing support you would give required information, so you could get accurate answers
 
Yep I don't know. I would not even be surprised if it was some kid playing around. I have had that happen my self. You get this strange call that asks you all kinds of strange questions that are not even related to what you do. I did start to wonder about this person and later I did find out it was a kid just playing around.
 
well if it was some kid then anyone using that IP will not be able to access any of my sites as i have done a blanket ban on the IP range used
 
You dont have to block the ip. Since it's dynamic, very likely he will get a new ip in short time. you just ignore it directly

Yeah, good idea. We've had strange chats. For example, somebody came on chat, asked a few questions then started being abusive towards us etc. We blocked his IP.
 
It happens. There are a lot of people who doesn't know what to do when they are free. Heard of spam emails, this one is 'spam chat' for you, you did the right thing by closing the chat. He/she just wasted your time.
 
We had a similar event happen a few months back, I forget the country of residence offhand but it was a country within Asia. They were requiring Cloud Hosting which at the time we hadn't moved into yet and offered some ridiculous price for what he needed, but he couldn't provide very strong details and was similar to your chat, very fishy.

Got to love the occasional strange requests in this industry....
