SATA Drive or SAS Drive

SAS drives are typically faster, but once you hit a certain number of disks your controller becomes your bottleneck and you might as well save costs and stick with SATA.
 
SAS drives are also historically more reliable than SATA. Thus, if performance and reliability are more important to you than capacity, choose SAS - or SSDs.
 
SAS or SSDs are mainly very useful when there are high disk I/Os task involved like in any virtulization technology where you host multiple vpss on single hardware node.
 
SAS drives are really designed for server use and have longer MTBF (Meantime between failures), whereas SATA drives are usually for less demanding tasks.

If your hosting system is Linux, then usually your money is better spent on RAM that SAS disks, as once a file is cached in memory the difference doesn't really matter.

This is the main reason that VPSs perform badly, they are usually short of RAM for caching.
 
The key difference is that SATA drives tend to be a better solution for desktops while SAS drives tend to be better for servers, so depending on the setup your managing if you are developing or managing a high capacity storage infrastructure the benefits of SAS drives overcome the price difference between the two drives.

Highly recommended Drive: Solid State Drive (SSD).
If we compare between SAS vs SATA Drive for a server; I would recommend SAS drives with their faster speed (up to 15K RPM) than SATA drives (typically 7.2K RPM).

SAS drives tend to be better solutions for servers and SATA drives for desktops.
 
If it's between SATA and SAS, SAS would be the winner in terms of speed.

But you can always consider the use of SSD as well
 
SAS is better than SATA, SAS has a 20x faster speed than SATA, but now there is also better that SSD Drive. Maybe the experts here many more know and understand third of the difference

There are several factors that makes SAS the preferred choice when it comes to stability and reliability. Some of them are listed as below:

SATA has data transfers rate of 150MB/s to 600MB/s.
SAS has data transfer rate of 300MB/s to 1500MB/s.

SATA is inexpensive and has large storage capacity.
SAS is expensive, has less storage capacity, and uses more power to operate.

SAS mostly favors speed over storage. The mean time between failures (MTBF) for a SAS drive is 1.2 to 1.6 million hours of use at 45 °C, while the MTBF for a SATA drive is 700,000 hours to 1.2 million hours of use at 25 °C.
 
SAS or SSD drives are always better if your applications depends on I/O rate, it will always give you better performance.
 
Maybe even skip SAS... The future is SSD. SATA will save you a bundle however. There are also Enterprise grade SATA drives for reliability...
 
Neither, go for SSD. Larger SSDs are now being made available, cannot wait for the day until SATA2 has gone extinct.

Also there will be less difficults as it is easier to manage and will provide you with small cable allowing increased airflow inside the computer. There typically will be about 4-6 SATA connections allowing for multiple hard drives to be hooked up.

SAS drives have connectors that allow for up to 12gbps (although you will never ever hit this type of speed) and they are not so much bigger that you should really worry about the airflow inside the system. But you are correct that most systems will not have SAS controller ports built into the motherboard. You typically need an SAS controller card as well so that you can use SAS drives. SSDs are more convenient in this regards because they use standard SATA connections and offer even better performance that SAS drives.
