Regarding the Windows blue screen...

Hi there,

Hopefully someone can help, or forward me onto a forum boars specifically for this type of thing.

I left my laptop with a friend, and since he gave it back to me, every time I start up it's been displaying various errors. Each time I noted down what it said; and usually it repeats.

"A fatal exception 06 has occurred at ----:--------. The current application will be terminated."

Replace the ----:------- with any of the following:
0000:00000017
C159:0000FFF7
C159:0000F374

So, can anyone help?

I'm using Windows 98SE.

Thanks all. :)

I also received the error:

C159:0000ECB0
C159:0000DA2C

Right after the last error (C159:0000DA2C), I received the following error:

"A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C0240117 in VXD VMM (0E) + 00001117. The current application will be terminated."

Does anyone know anything about these (or know of a forum board specifically for PCs and the likes)? Someone said it may be memory related.
I would take it into a PC repair place, however the only place near me... well... I won't say much other than I'd trust a baby more with my laptop than him.

Any help is much appreciated. :)

Check your memory hasn't come lose, that causes a lot of blue screen errors in Windows.
I haven't had one in years, I use XP Pro and don't think that has blue screens, still has enough problems though ;)

Jon can probably help with this, he has worked in a computer repair shop for years so could have some experience with the same thing.

Thanks for that, but unfortunately it isn't just loose memory. I opened up the back, took out the memory, blew off the dust, put it back in making sure was all fine... and still the same. Even before taking out the memory I noticed it wasn't loose; but decided to blow off the dust just to make it that bit cleaner.

What I did notice, however, when I flipped my laptop over... I heard a small piece move about near the USB/DVD Drive/Memory comp. - So, I know something is loose and in the region... but what?

I'm still hoping it isn't any serious... but I'm starting to think that hope is useless...

Do the errors occur if you try to boot up into safemode?

Have you tried reinstalling windows 98 over the top and replacing the system files?

What brand/model laptop is this (so I can read up on tech notes)?

Does this happen as windows is loading, or once the desktop is up?
Right after the desktop has loaded (There isn't any time at all for me to do anything).

I've booted into safemade twice, and as far as I can remember: no. I'll boot into it again to check.

No, I haven't.

What brand/model laptop is this (so I can read up on tech notes)?
It's a Medion MD9326, purchased in the U.K.

Thanks. This is much appreciated. :)

Insert your windows 98 cd into the cdrom and install Windows98 again into the same directory... all your current programs and files will still be in tact. You wont lose any information. From there when your machine boots up the next time it will have a new master boot record and some of the system files may be recreated removing any errors which may cause a bluescreen fatal.

If this doesnt work let me know and I will give you a few other ideas.

I have a little Question here,

Why haven't you updated to a newer version? I think the "Update" version of Windows Install isn't that costy :p

Thanks for that Jon. I started doing that, and then it came up with the following question. I don't know if whether I pick Yes or No will make a difference however just wanted clarification.

"Setup can save your existing MS-DOS and Windows files, so you can uninstall Windows 98 if necessary. This will require up to 110mb of disk space."

I've enough space, but wasn't sure if it actually matters which option I pick. It says Yes is recommended. Does it matter which I pick?

Thanks. :)

Thanks for that, but I'm afraid it didn't get very far.

At the "Finding MS-Dos and Windows system files" section, it just hangs - I timed it, and it just stayed like that for about half an hour; I actually then tried to Cancel and saw it had frozen.

Do you think it's hardware based, or is it definitely software based?
Here are all the errors I've had so far (some I've had more than once):

"A fatal exception 06 has occurred at ----:--------. The current application will be terminated."
With the ----:-------- being any one of the following:
0000:00000017
C159:0000FFF7
C159:0000F374
C159:0000ECB0
C159:0000DA2C
C159:0000FA71
C159:00000D51
017F:BFF9DFFF

Then I've also had:
"A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C0031C86. The current application will be terminated."

Then I've had:
"A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C0240117 in VXD VMM (0E) + 00001117. The current application will be terminated."
"A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:FF070022 in VDX acpi (0D) + 00000262. The current application will be terminated."

The above are all the errors I've had so far; any idea as whether they're only software based or hardware based?
I'm thinking, maybe if it's only a problem with Windows I should just place an order for something like SuSE Linux 9.1 Pro and then install that instead.

Thanks. :)

Found the cause.

Norton is your problem.
Uninstall it and remove everything to do with it on your computer.

# Use Registry Editor to delete the following registry key, if it exists:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\SymEvnt
# Click Start, click Run, type sysedit, and then click OK.
# On the Window menu, click System.ini.
# On the Search menu, click Find.
# In the Find box, type symevnt.386, and then press ENTER.
# Place a semicolon ( ; ) at the beginning of the line that contains "symevnt.386."
# On the File menu, click Save, and then click Exit on the File menu.
# Restart your computer.
# After Setup has finished successfully, reinstall the Symantec program.

After thinking about it for a minute...you can't exactly do it if you are saying that it crashes as soon as you start Windows...
Is there anyway you can do that before it crashes?

Wow, thanks for the John, much appreciated. :)

Well, I could always try it and see. If Norton is my problem, then if I were to completely remove it, it should stop crashing.

I'll go try it now and see what happens.
Thanks. :)

No problem :)
Hope this works, I will be hiding from this thread if it doesn't :D

Hopefully you will be able to get it done before it crashes.
Let us know if it works when you try it out!

YES!!!

Thank you John, that totally worked.

What I did was uninstall Norton Internet Security, and it asked me to restart... I thought should I do it now or later? So I decided now... and when Windows started again, no error, no crash, no problems!

I then deleted "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic
es\VxD\SymEvnt
"

However was unable to find "symevnt.386" in System.ini, nor any of the other windows. I then searched for it, and found it in the Symantec folder in "C:\Program Files\".

Should I delete the Symantec folder? I'm not going to install Norton again, I'm download AVG Free Edition now; and have ordered SuSE Linux and plan to use that when it arrives on Wednesday.

Very much appreciated John, I cannot thank you enough! :)

Glad you got it sorted :)

You may as well delete the folder if you won't be using the program again, the uninstall should remove everything, maybe leave some config files incase you reinstall but that should be an option when you uninstall.

Enjoy your problem free computer!
More time to spend on HR now that you don't have to worry about that ;)
