Most people that surf the Internet are usually there to gather information, surfers usually wants to access the information quickly and with little to no distractions. However, by keeping your visitors on the site for longer times, you can increase the number of page views as well your chances of them performing a desired action, as visitors traffic is one of the most important factors that determine the success of a website.
So share here your view on reasons why visitors leaves a page quickly...

Some quick answers why visitors leave pages quickly
  • Poor design
  • Content that doesn't match their search query
  • Clutter
  • Extra long paragraphs
  • Background music that can't be turned off
  • Slow download times
  • Poor font and background color combination making it hard to read
  • Poor navigation

Steve seemed to have nailed this one. Another thing that tends to bother me is the flash spokesperson some sites have. Although most give the option to pause or close the flash object, it still becomes annoying when they pop up on every new page you browse on the site.

I agree. Flash spokespersons like SitePal have proven time and again that they can improve sales, but even this can be abused by putting it on every page, or by making their speech too long.

Flash in particular is a drag too. Big Flash intros with no skip link. Flash headers with flash navigation is a pain too.

Aside from the lists that Steve mentioned, I would like to add my own opinion regarding websites that would send visitors away.

  • Very long pages
  • Pop-up advertisements
  • Background colors that hurt the eyes
  • Few information

Thanks for the lists, Steve and ilykme. Pop-up ads do annoy me! I also leave sites that are too slow to load up, like sites with flash, for example.

Videos those are played automatically on a web page also inspire me to get rid of the site quickly. Though I use high speed connection, I don't want to load something I don't want or need.

My personal hate and turn off is music that plays that you cannot turn off. It is so easy to put an 'off' switch that there is really no excuse for bombarding your visitors with your own horrible musical tastes!

LOL, I agree with the musical taste things. Just because you like Britney Spears doesn't mean I also like her. Well, you can turn off the music but it will still be loading, right? So it will still hurt if you have connection with limited bandwidth.

One thing not mentioned is lack of content. Usually I land on a page when looking for "X". I'm quickly gone if I can't find the information for "X" or worse, I'm presented with information for "Y" instead and told how much better it is than "X".

Pop up ads really get to me so i don't really bother about sticking around. Figure if the content was good enough they wouldn't need popup ads to make money

Having a "Under Construction" sign on your main page will also give very bad first impressions and cause most visitors to never come back.

I agree with the under construction sign, it's tacky. Why not just re-launch when it's complete and launch worthy. I hate broken links in important sections.
