I am in process of developing a web site that look familiar to www.craigslist.org , the coding is done in java and mysql and run on linux. I am looking for a host server but I am clueless of which server or which host is best for this site.
Although the site is not as big as www.craigslist.org since I am only concentrate on One county like Los Angeles. My number one worry is database space ? I am not sure how the web host handle database space ? How much space should I get ? What if the business growth etc Please please help.

for the site of craiglist, I believe they have multiple servers, not one. You might want to start with one server, and expand when needed? A new server usually comes with 160GB+ space, so you dont need to worry about the disk space.

You get tons of space today, no need to worry. Just find a good host, that supports java. MySQL is standard on LInux, but java is not.

You dont have to start with a server farm - shared hsoting is more than enough at this stage.

A site like craigslist does not take much in space/bandwidth because it is lightly designed. However, what you should worry about most is the load caused by traffic.

Since you are focusing on just 1 city and not the whole continent, you would do just fine in a simple shared hosting environment to start with. I wouldn't recommend a dedicated server - it would be a waste of time and money you can invest in advertising.

I definitely do not see you overgrowing anything bigger than a high-end VPS solution.
