Perlbill to ModernBill: anyone made the switch?

Hi all,

I'm soon going to be switching to ModernBill, away from my current solution PerlBill (or Logic Bill, as they've since rebranded themselves). I am not the world's savviest with manipulating MySQL databases; and so while ModernBill does give a tool to assist with the migrations, there isn't an automatic migration feature - I have to do this myself.

Has anyone else made this particular changeover? What problems were there? (The switchover won't be for a few more months, and already I'm dreading this bit...I can just picture all the frustrations and hassles of trying to get the database structures matched up and the data moved.)

Hello Lesli,
I have not done this conversion before. If you have a link to the instructions I would be happy to have a good read over them. I have done a number of other DB migrations before and may be able to offer some advice on this.

It's a ZIP file that they sent to me. The file might be available on their site, but I haven't done any extensive digging to find it just yet.

I will see if I can find it and see what's needed. I think with the help of people around here you should be just fine. All I strongly suggest is that you do the conversion on a test site with a copy of the data instead of with the live data.

That's definitely the plan. Otherwise, ghods only know what I'll end up with. However, bluntly, I'm getting lazy / fed up. I don't want to test and test and test and figure out and troubleshoot, I just...want...the...data...transferred. (Am still arguing with my computer about who controls which OS is installed. Am losing. Plus, no coffee yet this morning.) I tried contacting ModernBill, and they don't offer transferral services from PerlBill. (Dangit.)

Hi,

I'm sorry for this off-topic, but could you please share with us why are you moving away from PerlBill?

Thanks.

Regards,

Jaime

Perlbill was the first billing application I used when I entered the hosting business. I paid just under $200 for the license, and had bad experiences with their support, was less than thrilled at their update schedule, and never ever installed an update without watching the complaints pile up in the support forums. They were a one person operation, they grew slowly, but I didn't get the sense that they respected their customers. Perlbill - now LogicBill - may very well have matured, but they lost my business a long time ago. It would take a hell of a lot for me to try them again. I'd have to hear solid, very appreciative reviews of their product from industry people whom I know and respect.

On my specific choice of ModernBill as the replacement, I've seen my server provider use ModernBill for over two years now - I went with this provider because I trust their people and their judgement, and I respect how they respect their clients. This provider has changed helpdesk applications multiple times over the years, we've moved to a new datacenter during my tenure with them, but they have stuck with ModernBill for billing. This to me...really says something about ModernBill's long-term workability and stability.

I also like the look of the feature set MB is releasing for v5, I like that they've consciously worked to make the user interfaces more usable, and from what I've been able to find out, they've also enhanced the documentation. I view my billing software as a tool I use to run my business. I don't want to spend months fiddling with it, tweaking it, creating hacks on my own...nope. While I should know how to do these things, I shouldn't necessarily have to. Just let me use the tool and spend time on my customers - not my business tools.
