Pay or Do it Yourself

Do you think that the situation ever arises where it is worthwhile paying for advertising? Many of the services I have seen, well they seem like a rip off for what you get. Are you better off just learning to it yourself?

Personally, you shouldn't trust any advertising agency. Learn and do it yourself is the best option. Unless you are busy making BIG money and let they handle it for you.

Small businesses learn how to market themselves. Big boys have a team to do it for them :D.

Depends on several factors

Are you talking about paying for ads like banner ads, etc? Sometimes this can be very cost effective as banner ads are generally quite cheap. Not a great tactic for sales but good for building your brand if you have a catchy banner.

If you're paying someone else to put up advertising for you, then I wouldn't recommend it unless it's a very good service. Many of these services post your ad at a bunch of crappy FFA sites that no one actually looks at.

I was talking more of the all in one packages that claim to tackle all advertising that you will need, on your behalf. Fees are normally fairly extortionate of course, and no I have never used one.

I can't imagine the advertising from such places would be worth it. While the advertising they do may be worth the carges on a per hour basis it may not bring in the clients you want and thus will be costly for not much to show for it. Doing it a bit slower by yourself is a much better bargain, plus you won't have to worry about their tactics.

I'm very gun shy when it comes to paying someone to do my advertising. I would have to know exactly what I was getting and still think it was a good deal. I'd much rather do it myself even though I'd have to take the time. Besides that if I do it myself I can't be mad at them for not living up to my expectations.

You're right that tactics may be dubious, and this is a big concern of mine. We actually had a client at the place I worked (before freelancing), come in and ask if anyone was knowledgeable in black hat techniques. We all worked to educate him as to why it was a bad idea but he pressed forward.

It only took about two days before Google banned him. A few hours at the top of the search engines, and it was all gone.

I prefer to handle the promotion and marketing of my websites and businesses myself. Their techniques are sometimes what people consider blackhat and I don't want that lol. In the end, I am the one who knows what I want :p

Well!having an agency to advertise your site would be good.
But not to cause much expense then you should try to learn how to advertise your site.
There are many site who are offering a free tutorial for it.There's no harm in trying my friend.

Knowing where you are advertising, how much it's costing, where etc is key to running your business. Delegate this and you will lose a lot of control.

Unless otherwise you spend money on advertising, you loose out on the opportunity to grow bigger and get more clients. Advertising is an integral part of business and you will have to spend money on this to grow bigger. It can work as a catalyst for faster growth.

Of course, you should learn about this and do it somehow yourself. But I am sure that advertising is not a bad thing for promotion.

I would pay professionals to handle advertising for me if I had a need (which I will do soon). To get me to part with money it would require a few face to face meetings to discuss what I expect to get back from this and what they will be doing to deliver.

Mostly, my advertisements are done on the internet.

I do it myself so that i can be in control of the budget that will be allocated.

It depending on yourself.
You get a professional design if you pay for it.

If you are profesional designer, of coz you can do it yourself.
If not, I don't think you designing item will as good as you pay.

Advertising is like accounting: you're better off if you know a little bit about it yourself, and know and trust whomever you're paying to handle it for you. That way, if someone's claiming that they will submit you to 300 search engines but 275 of them are tiny search engines, region-specific search engines where your target market doesn't even go, or link farms, you will know what to ask ahead of time and find out if they're going to give you quality for the money you pay, or if they're going to meet the letter of their offerings but the results will be a bit...dodgy (for lack of a better term.)

You'll also be better equipped to tell them what you want, if you know a little bit about internet advertising. This will make their lives easier, if they're ethical, because they can charge you money and do exactly what you want them to do and give you the quality results you'd expect for your money (or can competently advise you that what you want won't yield good results.)
