OScommerce?

My host is offering this solution for eCart. I never tried to administer my own shopping cart. Is OScommerce good solution or not? What are the alternatives?

IMO OScommerce is the best for what it does. It has a learning curve, but after that it's extremely simple to modify to fit your needs.

I was under the impression that OSCommerce was on it's way out as Magento Commerce had taken so much of a chunk of the market. Much better cart in my opinion.

OSCommerce was good (if not GREAT) at what it did for a shopping cart with no price tag!

OScommerce is easy and really great you can go with that. You might feel hard to learn first but once to got the concept then you will find it pretty easy. Give it a try

Thanks

OSC is more "shared hosting friendly" than MC due to the load and install requirements, however anyone serious about their online shop will also be looking at PCI compliance, being on a dedicated server and so on anyway

With the next version of OSC it's looking to be as featureful (and power hungry) as MC, so the choice is one of preference rather than platform

Check out http://www.creloaded.com - I've been VERY impressed with these guys. They have a free edition (community supported) and as far as load they're lot bad on a server - less than Magento is!

It's nice to hear that developement on OSC is still continuing. I know there was a debate on that for a while, so it's nice to hear that they'll be moving forward.

As far as E commerce solutions are concerned , OS commerce is the best, it is easy to use
OSC the best? Compared to what other software?

Keep in mind that OS Commerce has never released a "stable" version, the highest they got was RC2, and the stuff that is being worked on last year are in ALPHA status. I'd never use an ALPHA product in a production environment.

But I am interested to hear what other products you've used and why OSC ranks better than them.

I prefer to design my own shopping cart instead of using OSCommerce, hire a good php mysql developer and desing your own.

If you don't have funds for this, well go ahead with OSCommerce.

I'll add to Steve's question and ask how you have dealt with PCI Compliance and PA-DSS with regards to the shopping carts that you've designed?
