Hey everyone!
I have been operating an IRC channel on a local server of mine (irc.lagnet.org.za) and have struck on an idea which I think could go big and would like your feedback.
As many of you already know, I live in South Africa and as such struggle to find decent hosting due to the monopolisation of the fixed-line internet industry. We can end up paying 100's of dollars for just a few gigs of transfer a month.
Now, what I would like to do, is set up a PHP, Unix & Linux web site, but more than just a boring old Forum with a nice banner. I am looking at producing a site, which has multiple mirrors (for many different types of OpenSource software) as well as a database of Tutorials and FAQ documents.
I want to go above and beyond the standard little Forum and in fact try and provide a worldclass network of sites, aimed at a specialist section of the world's economic population. I have researched the market here and have found that there is a need for a site such as what I am proposing and there is also a definite lack of support in that sector.
What I am asking for is some support and ideas (and possibly financial input as well) as to how to make this initiative WORK. Currently I have registered www.php.za.net, however I would like to make this site encompass a broader spectrum and as such would appreciate ideas for a domain name, and possibly even a catch-line.
I would also like for any reccomendations about mirroring and supplying of OpenSource software. I would like to be able to provide mirrors and ftp:// downloads for popular types of software and programs. Any reccomendations other than of course PHP, would be gratefully accepted.
My next question is whether anyone would be interested in sponsoring money or paying for banner space on these web-pages and if so, what you would be willing to contribute.
As I start to get ideas together and more information, I will start looking around for mirroring information and will also start accepting sbmissions of Walk-Throughs and tutorials for things like setting up an Apache Server and running PHP. If anyone is feeling particularly brave, I am looking for someone with whom I can work on a PHP Tutorial with. Again, any other ideas will be most graciously contimplated.
If you can think of any good ideas, or would merely like to comment on whether you think this is a good or bad topic, please PM me or post in this thread. I will be accepting contributions and financial input as soon as I find a group of people who are willing to help me with this.
Many Thanks,
~Equinox
