One Large Screen vs Dual Screen?

It is about time I upgrade my 19" Samsung flat LCD. It has served me right for 4 years, but I feel I need a larger screen area. So I am considering 2 options, and I hope those with experience can share and help shape my decision-making.

Option 1: To go for 1 large 22-24" wide-screen.

Option 2: Create dual-screen with 2 mid-size (18-20") monitors.

While both options increase productivity (15-50% according to various sources) there is a con (special video card is needed) for Option 2. Nevertheless, I fall back on your personal feedback - if you had to upgrade your monitor size or if you have dual-screen - how has it changed your performance and life?

I use dual on my desktop, yes the video card costs but a quick purchase on Newegg can have you up and running for around $100 with a fairly nice card. What I like about dual is that the monitors can be comfortably angled and you're working with multiple screens. It really helps me with development and handling support tasks much more efficiently.

I'd say 40-60% efficiency improvement for me would not be too liberal an estimate. It lets me work and it also lets me keep chat windows open but separate when I'm talking to friends. I think the physical separation does wonders.

I would go for the dual as well. I find it offers more productivity, and lets you perform different tasks while still keeping others open on the second monitor.

Because of aspect ratios, I would expect the duals to allow more room to work with. Also, I would personally tend to sit further back from a larger monitor, making the extra size somewhat redundant.

I like one big screen for design work.

When working with two documents though, two screen becomes very handy!

Unless the first screen is incredibly small (<"15) which it isn't, it's more practical to have two screens instead of one especially for your needs.

I will prefer dual screen due to you can multitasking yourself in a same time..
I using 2 LCD as well, but fill that not enough currently....
Normally I will use one LCD for monitoring or watching movie and another for daily job..

I've been using dual screen for quite awhile now and it is very handy for multi-tasking. I usually keep FireFox open in my main screen and any other activities open in the second (Excel, Twhirl, various programs/tools).

However, I used to keep Outlook open in my second screen, but recently switched to Gmail and am now finding my second screen is much more barren than it used to be.
