Offers

When someone is aware that you own and/or work for a hosting company, are you ever getting random emails from others who own the same type of company and are wanting to sell? I have received some random inquires lately and I am wondering how common this is. Some of these places are not big (and thats ok) but they are not just single times either, its like 2-3 per day, never just 1 they always come in sets.

Can't say we receive requests in sets. We do advertise our intent to purchase shared hosting companies, so we do receive response to that, but it's pretty much at random.

Much like Steve, we see requests on occasion, or contact from companies looking to broker a deal, but nothing as automated as a mailing list type thing that I know of.

I have only been asked to 'babysit' for someone who was going to be spending some time away and who didn't want their business to go to pot. I guess the people I associate with know that I haven't the money to buy out a company even if I should want to ;)

We use to have companies e-mail us frequently in regards to purchasing them. Never 2 - 3 a day but that was when the economy was much better. Maybe, you are sending a message to contact me and the economy has gotten worse so you look like a good person to sell too.

So you're saying that offers come in clusters. Silence then a number of them, then silence again. Sounds like typical statistical stuff to me. My affiliate commissions often come in the same pattern. This is why averages can sometimes be very misleading.

We've received a number of private offers for someone to sell a company to us - most of the time they turn out to be scams though.

I think the notes for this would be that yes, they tend to come in sets and for some reason a niche that we deal with directly, some others out there like to "fake sale" their sites around. After doing some heavy research, I found 3 of my past 7 requests to buy came from the same place (same guy and all) who was a pretty shady one to start with when you researched the company names. :D

Those went in the pitch pile.

Some good requests have came around lately that we are still working on, but yes its weird that they are coming in flocks and stuff.

Time by time we get as offers as requests to sell or be sold. Seriosly I have never pay attention to such things.

I would pay some attention but its pretty quick to weed out the good from the bad. I just ended up getting an offer this week for someone who wants to get out of the VPS biz', it does look interesting but I am still waiting to hear back from the person regarding all the numbers. :)

Good luck on this opportunity. :)

We've received a lot of random requests from people looking to buy rather than sell. They would come on live support and ask if the site is for sale.

I'm not surprised if this is happening more often. Specifically because of the current economy. There are many very small hosts that generate less than 5 figures annually. It's quite possible that with all the job losses over the past year that many have lost their regular income and might be so cash strapped that they need to sell their side businesses.

It would probably be a good idea to be very cautious, though. Just in case these hosting companies for sale are scams. You don't want to be buying another host to find all the customers cancel their accounts within weeks. Definitely get some assurances on paper and maybe in escrow to protect both parties.

Ah sighs, The events of PM Spam! Seriously I would avoid them. They are just 'Spammers' who cannot get Clients so have to PM Spam to get them.

Rediculous. I would love to see a board where PM's are not permitted. ROFL.

Just ignore them :)
