NHL season officially cancelled today

I will be the first to admit that I am not an avid hockey fan. However, it does sadden me that today the powers that be made their official announcements that the 2004-2005 NHL season is officially cancelled. First time in sports history that any league has cancelled an entire season.

Although I feel bad for the fans, the people I feel for the most are the ones behind the scenes. The ones who earn their living with a hotdog stand in front of the various arenas. The ones who sell game programs. The ones who sell t-shirts, caps, memorabilia. These are the people who will be suffering. These are the people who will be challenged with their next mortgage payment. Certainly not the NHL players or the owners or the TV networks. They're well padded financially. It's the little guy who will end up losing his home as a result of the self serving higher ups.

Here is a copy and paste of my feelings on this that I posted on another forum.

Glad they cancelled it.
Hopefully 8 or 10 teams will drop off the map.

The league is in lousy condition.
In 1994 the NHL was positioned to become the third most watched sport in North America. Somehow between then and now creeps like Bettman and Goodenow manage to totally destroy the league.
If either one of these two are working a job anywhere remotely related to hockey next year the league deserves another year off.

Here is what I posted in response to a comment that the fans were the ones to lose out.

Actually, the people it hurts most are the vendors and concession people, and the people who park cars etc. who depend on the rink being full of people so they can make a living.

Very true, blue.

When you drive down the road, ever look at the countless number of houses that you pass? Every one of them has a story to tell about their experience in life. And no doubt, some of the ones you drive by are ones that are somehow adversely affected by the disgraceful behavior of all of these spoiled-rotten egocentric self-important NHL employees/managers/bosses.

At this point, I am actually torn. I don't know whether to side with management or players. I just see them both as narrow minded tunnel-visioned and stubborn.

All I can say is if I ever go to a hockey game in the future (Ha! not likely) and I buy a hot dog, I'll be sure to give the guy a healthy tip. ;)

I wonder, does anyone actually win anything out of all this? It stikes me as a lose-lose-lose situation, which, of course, is very likely to be a mark of... well... stupidity.

It certainly does appear to be lose-lose, Dan. All around for everyone.

Heh, unless you are someone like the owners of the Montreal franchise. They claim that given how they were running in the red, they are further ahead not having had a season at all.

These kind of things make me mad. I don't like hockey at all (I'm a soccer guy) but it must be incredibly irritating to have your favorite sport's leauge canceled because of something like this.

The owners aren't going to budge this time unlike in 1994 and the players still think they will. It's just going to get worse for the players the longer they say we're not going to accept the owners deal. The cap of 42 million is going to end up being like 30 million a team now or worse along with everything else the owners wanted. The owners were right this time and the players just won't accept it

What I don't understand is why the NHL can't take a page from the NFL playbook.
(other that the obvious reasons that Goodenow and Bettman are idiots)

Have a salary cap, whatever number, let's call it 40 million, but allow each team to designate one player who is the "franchise" player. That player's salary wouldn't count toward the cap.
This gives every team the leeway to have a superstar player and still have some money to build a team around him.

Certainly not the NHL players or the owners or the TV networks. They're well padded financially.

While I don't feel bad for the TV networks, I do feel bad for the players. More so the rookie players who's first season was two years ago. Those players didn't really get the chance to get themselves financially set in the world of hockey, prior to having their dreams, and not mention their salaries practically ripped from them.

What's sad is, when the NHL administrators and employees get off their rears to end this crap, those rookies will most likely be out of jobs.

I also feel bad for the guys who never made it to the NHL yet, but had a shot.

Typically, even with their union, players only get paid the big dollars when they play. When they don't play, from what I understand, their salaries are substantially lower. So, to avoid breech in their contracts, the NHL will need to compensate for that missed salary for the seasons missed.

haha, did any of you see the recent news where the wall street journal and a boston company wanted to buy the whole league? In the beginning of the season, all the teams were estiamted at 4.9 billion. The Boston co. and WSJ offer like 2.3 billion or something, so they obviously got rejected. Could you imagine though, one person / company owning the whole league. They could like stack one team and like propose trades to themselves...haha

Yeah I heard about that the one problem with that deal was that every owner got the same amount of money. There is some franchises that were worth less and some that were worth signifcantly more such as new york and toronto.
