Hi all, I'm so new to web hosting. Even I own a site but the hosting service is not good. So I'm trying to opt for a much better provider. I'm primarily concerned about starting my site for selling products online from affiliate networks. Also I like to start my own forum and blog. I heard a lot about godaddy.com and their reputation. I'm on the edge to buy a domain and space from them. But I like to get suggestion from the experts before I go for it. Knidly give me your valuable suggestions and information. :)

Well, I'll start you off. It's generally not advised to "register" your domain and host from the same provider. The reason being that the provider, if they find objectionable content on your site, can cancel your hosting and take your domain.

You might want to look in the offers section (Marketplace) or in the reviews sections. Or, you can start browsing around and perhaps one of the hosts who contributes to the forums will catch your attention.

This might take a while, I know, but it's better to do your homework now.

Yep, research is key when it comes to choosing a new provider. Find a few hosts that you like and ask us our thoughsts on them.

Also, one bit of advice stay away from hosts that oversell. For example:

300GB space, 1TB bandwidth for 3.99 a month...something like that is overselling. If you are not sure if the host you like is overselling just us ask and we will be more than happy to answer your questions.

I saw the fusion-hosts site and there are some yearly plans with different parameters. Can I host multiple domains/sites in these plans? There is a field "Add-on domains" in that list with unlimited as value. I'm sorry to ask this question. What does it mean? Does it mean that I can host multiple domains/sites in the shared space? Also the price seems cheap about $8.99 as the starter pack for yearly plans.

GoDaddy.com does seem to have an OK reputation. The key to their service is not to host mission-critical websites. If a site you want to build is a simple one that's not going to process a lot of traffic, I think its a good idea to try them.

As was mentioned before, make sure to register your domain name with a well known domain registrar. DO NOT fall for a "Free Domain" with 1 year of hosting kind of deals with web hosting companies as the domain is key to your business, so you want to keep control over it.

As far as hosting itself, there will be hundreds, if not thousands of companies that will fit your technical requirements. Question is - how do you pick one?

My personal suggestion is to do little research:
- do not go for the most resources for less price
- contact the company with questions you might have
- look into company history (how old their domain is, what is their reputation is like)

This will be a good guide to start:

Let us know if you narrow something down or if you have further questions.

Add-on domain is that you can add additional domains under the same shared plan. Add-on domains will share the space and traffic of the main shared account.

As yourself a question: is "unlimited" (anything) key for you at this time? You seem to have started your thread with an idea to run a relatively small site. Do you need the option to host 20 sites now? If I were you, I would focus on the level of support you can get. Know how much you are ready to pay per month for the service and go from there.

Yes, I you can host domains/sites on the shared account.

MOD NOTE: Edited for self-promotional talk.

Hello forumblazer,
My advice to use to find a reliable web host which provides one-click-installer(Fantastico or installatron), has some kind of live chat support system. Don't fall for those unlimited disk space/bandwidth as nothing is unlimited. Ask as many questions to the web host you might host with. Best of luck and if you got any questions HD community will happy answer them.

When I originally setup my company I used godaddy.com to register my domain. Then when setting up a change of nameservers IP's my domain got stuck in an loop that would not update the changes. After numerous calls to their tech support dept they finally admitted a technical software glitch was the root cause. It did take a couple of days to sort out the problems so big companies can have problems too.

As you mention in your post it is you intention to run a forum and blog, so look for a company that can provide you with scalabilty as your needs expand. Others have pointed out not to use the same company for hosting and domain registration and I tend to agree. Register your domain with a large well known ICANN approved registrar and trust your web site to a company that specializes in hosting, not domain registrations.

Best of Luck,
Chris

P.S I don't use godaddy.com for domain registrations anymore

Registering Domains with the same hosting provider is indeed a good decision. Basically, it will allow you to manage your Domains and Hosting package very well.

Choosing a Hosting provider is not very difficult if you are sure about your Requirements. I would suggest you to decide the platform you would need for Hosting your website. For this purpose, you can check the Programming Languages you have used to Develop your websites. Then you can check the amount of Disk space and Bandwidth you would require for all your websites.

Once you are sure about the Hosting platform and the Disk space and Bandwidth you require, look for the Kind of Support the Hosting provider Offers. As you are a newbie in the Hosting Industry, I would suggest you to choose a Web host who provides 24x7 Support. Also, check if the Hosting provider can offer you Support for some of the Applications you would need which would be helpful.

Hope this helps...

And also expose you to unnecessary headaches.

I agree with that. I don't have anything against any web hosting provider, and all might be swell. However, usually problems begin if you were to want to switch providers - then if you are lucky enough, you'll only end up paying all kinds of "fees" to get the name transferred to you. :smash:

Obviously we cannot generalize, as not all providers are like that, but there are just so many stories! True service is tested during bad times, not good times.

Even though we offer domain name registration we always encourage folks to use an ICANN approved registrar. Some hosts could have you over a barrel when you want to switch hosting companies and you may end up paying extra fees to get 'your' domain. IMHO keep hosting and domain registration separated, you'll sleep better at night ;)

Good Luck,
Chris

You should check on forums offers, godaddy.com are not really recommended.

I also recommend separating your domain name and web hosting providers. I don't think you'll have any problems registering a domain name with GoDaddy. There are plenty of hosts right here on Hosting Discussion that could customize a solution for you, if needed.

I would only reccommend Go Daddy if you have a personal site but then again nearly any host can run a small site effectively. People tend to get into problems with Go Daddy when they gain size.

There's quite a few people that purchase their domains from godaddy because it's cheap....but I'm pretty sure that many people host their web site elsewhere. So if you were to go with godaddy, I would recommend registering your domain there and then finding a reliable host that has great customer service that is available to you anytime. See what their history is like and how their up-time is for their servers.
