American scientists found a new planet in the solar system, 6.2 billion miles from Earth.

The new planet, the tenth heavenly body in the solar system, has been named Sedna, after the Inuit goddess of the ocean.

And it followed sightings of a "mysterious object" by the Hubble Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope. The new planet, the first to be discovered for more than 70 years, is believed to be about 1250 miles across.

What do you all think?
 
I donno about you guys, but space exploration is pretty cool if we can actually study it and so on. I dont know how a planet 6.2 billion miles from Earth is going to benifit anyone.

Probably just me on that thought... but instead of wasting billions of dollars on exploring 10+ billion miles away from us. Why not spend the billions of dollars on fixing the damage we have caused to the earth and furthering our studies on different types of energy and cures for disease.


I dont see the point in studying something billions of miles away which is going to cost billions of dollars to study / build potential craft to explore the planet... when there are so many other dilemas going on locally.
 
The reason we do this is probably because of our need to find intelligent life out there.

Norwegian papers say that pictures will be revealed by nasa later tonight but they are still arguing wether or not to call it a planet.

I see your point but what if we could live on another planet? But then again, we need to solve / fix problems at home too.

I think the entire space thing is cool but agree a lot of it is a wast of money.
 
Pretty cool if this turns out to be an actaul planet. Even though millions are spent on space exploration, the technology developed enters into mainstream society. We now have medications, audio technoloy, visual technology, and more effiecient chip and electronic manufaturing because of space exploration. While not noticable to the public the benefit is there.
