New drives

I have a spare server that right now is a play toy and I am very happy that no clients are hosted on it as the drive keeps failing. No idea what is going on here and for awhile I was thinking some crazy voodoo or something but it seems its at its end. We are going to gank it out and replace it tonight and I am still a little etchy on it wondering why it just flat out died or became gimp like.

What sort of things were happening on the drive that was causing the failure? Was the drive actually spinning down or was it corrupting? If it was corrupting, were you getting errors on the screen? Maybe kernel panic notices? Anything in the dmesg or other logs on the machine to help troubleshoot it?

Also, OS and version. Were they kept up to date?

I guess you'd better replace the driver with a new one. if you need please your client, that will be right thing to do.

It had been in action for a good while before it decided to putter up its last time and then fizzle out.

The backups ran (which are the only thing that hit that drive) caused the machine to stop responding, then we got a couple of smart errors on the drive itself.

Do not fret, for the holidays we got a new drive (nice gift isn't it?).

Sometimes it doesn't take much to cause problems. One little error gets multiplied or perhaps it was off specs a hair when made. At least you got a new one now so you'll be all set. Hopefully this one lasts you a long time to make up for the bad one.

Perfect timimg for a new drive. That's the thing with these drives something very small can make them go cukoo and then mess everyhting else up. Thankfully you got a replacement and hopefully the problem will be gone too.

As others have said the reason for failure can be the result of many things. Always good to have backup drives handy in these situations. :)

Try running fsck and see what errors are on the drive this should help you in finding out whats going on.
