I need a host that can manage my website and update it with new products as they come. Ive had the name many years, but havnt done nothing in 3 yrs with it I shut down for family reasons but wish to reopen the website, Iam not in contact with the previous host(he was a reseller), will this be a problem moving my name to a new host? Iam not schooled in this area of the web.
any help would be great.
:)

Go to iwhois.com and enter your domain name. If it's registered in your name and you have access to it, it shouldn't be a problem pointing it to a different host.

If it's registered with the host in his name, then you may have a problem pointing it to a new provider.

Keep us updated.

Thread moved to Web Hosting Discussion pending updates...

As webfreak said, if it's yours you can do anything you want with it, but for the most part a host doesn't generally maintain and update your site. That's something you do or pay someone else to do.

Not many hosts will manage your website for you. I would either recommend you getting a website designed with some sort of CMS (content management system) so that it is very easy for you to update it, or find a host that has a webdesign team that can help you for an affordable rate.

I actually recommend that you DON'T have your site managed by your webhost, much like you don't want your domain name registered by your webhost (in most cases). There's too many cases out there about people holding things hostage, and that's the last thing you'd want with your website design/product/domain also.

If you need a few designers that run maintenance packages for updating products etc, drop me a PM here on the forums and I'll be happy to pass along people who I've had dealings with and people who I recommend to our own hosting customers.

Having an all in one stop is nice, but it's usually better to have a designer do design, a host maintain servers, and an SEO company do marketing - a one stop shop usually means you're getting less that adaquate service on some level. (USUALLY does not mean ALWAYS).

What is your interest in being able to manage your own site - not the hosting, but the updates of your products?

As explained by webfreak, you can retrieve the domain as it is registered under your name. But, I am not sure if you can retrieve the website or related data, you can try and contact your previous host and try your luck for the same.

One small question, have you been paying the domain renewal charges?
If yes then its better for you, but if not then your domain might have got expired by now.

I don't know of many hosts that will manage your website/contents for you...that's something you're responsible for. As stated, if the domain is still yours, you are free to move it to whoever you like.

yeah, you can indeed move the domain, you can only retrieve the previous data of your website if you are choosing the same web host (take a chance if they still have it). Or else if you are ok with rebuilding the website then you can go ahead and start from the grass root level. All the best !!

I just started building my webpage with this really good hosting company, they help you with everything, building the website, putting in Adsense and links, and with generating traffic to the site too when its finished.
