My current hell with iPowerWeb -- What might I do?

Hello,

I can't believe I found a forum like this! What a resource!

Anyway, I'm in the middle of a little hell with my current webhost, iPowerWeb. They've been fairly solid up until this issue, with some decent enough Tech support (albeit somewhat slow) and features aplenty. My server is now, however, plagued by a dreadful "max_user_connections" mySQL error. How this could have possibly come about, I have little idea, because my traffic is hardly strenuous on any server as to exceed a limit of 500 connections. I contacted their support about 2 and a half weeks ago and they said that the problem was due to my scripts "not complying with the set 'max_user_connections' limit". (Sure, blame it on me.) Perplexed, I went through ALL of my scripts with a fine-tooth comb, and not only found few ways of adjusting anything regarding SQL server interactions, but also that doing so made the problem WORSE. Furthermore, these are just some basic, oft-used scripts, such as XMB Forums and Kreative News -- certainly nothing special or elaborate. I contacted them again and they said that they would look into it...
A few days later I got a response that said that they had raised my server's "max_user_connections" to the highest allowed on shared hosting, and that it should fix the problem. It didn't. And so the problem goes on, and I grow more angry. I am currently in talks with their QA Manager, who said in what seemed like a form letter that he would "do all that he can". Alas, he's only working Mon-Fri unlike support, so I must wait 48+ precious hours (for me, anyway) for any response. I told him that I simply want to cancel my account soon and get a different host. (FYI: I am currently looking at Aventure Host, which appears to be very professional and is right now holding a special that is hard to ignore. I also have used XMB Forums - developed by one of Aventure's clusters - for a couple years, and have found their people to be nothing short of superb.). We will see if the manager can sort this out, or at least help with the situation, but I am not holding my breath.

So, what does this sound like to you? Good host gone bad, or just bad host holding the same? Like I said, they've always been great up until now -- I am surprised to say the least. I still maintain that it could not possibly be my end that is causing the issues, but it's my word against their's. There's also not much I can do to prove my case simply because I don't know what's going on to begin with. I am also worried that I will not be refunded the unused portion of my subscription year (ending in June), as the 30-day money-back guarantee was over many months ago; they technically owe me nothing, even though there was no way I could've prognosticated this issue so far back.

Does anybody have any advice for this situation? Or, at least some feedback on Aventure Host (with which I will most likely host with if this doesn't pan out)? I figured that this was an ideal place to tell my tale when I came across it.

Thanks for any help!

Its surprising you went thru so much time with **only** those few problems. iPowerweb.com is in disrepute and has taken a major falling in reputation across the industry. There are tonnes of customers complaing and leaving... to put it plainly you've been lucky till now and it just ran out.

Max user connections or max mysql connections are server-wide values and NOT a per account or per site value. On a shared server it means ALL Accounts share that pool...whether a site has a million hits or 10 hits a day.

So, simply if you are a server with a busy site....you get bushwhacked. That doesn't mean your code is bad...it just means someone else ate your lunch. This will happen on any busy server...only way to avoid rush hour is to be on a less-loaded server or a VPS.

There are plenty of hosts for you to choose from its a shame about ipowerweb. Just another black mark to add to the industry I suppose. The good news is that you are ready to move to a new host. Best of luck with whoever you end up choosing.

Thanks for your help! Well, my site went down completely this morning, not allowing any access to SQL pages at all. I basically told iPowerWeb that if they didn't fix it I'd drop them tomorrow. It's good to know that I am not alone with the iPW problems, I suppose. At this point I really don't care if they give me my unused account subscription payment back. It was worth every penny up until now.
Aventure said they can transfer my site to their server if I buy one, which I'll probably do tomorrow. I guess I'm just hoping that this new (and better) server will...well...serve my purposes better, because I can't afford a dedicated server at the moment. The company looks to be top-notch, and with $99/yr for 750MBs, 35GB/mo, unlimited databases, and a ton of other goodies, I can't go wrong.
This whole business will be a moot point in a few months anyway, as Maxis, the game studio for which my website is aimed at, has agreed to host me and many others for free with unlimited amentities soon. That should be nice when it comes. ;)

Thanks again!
