Music selling web site?

A friend of mine is in a band that plays amazing funk. As they are trying to seek ways to make use of the Internet, I proposed an idea of showcasing their music online.

One of the ideas is for them to sell music online, but does anyone here know of any popular resources that allow young bands to sell their music (commission based on not).

I know of a couple of sites, but they do not offer the option of selling your music - just promoting it publicly.

Thank you.

Art,

As you may or may not know, I too am in a band, and can give you some tips.

There are many outlets, and they depend on which direction your friend wants to go.

- Traditional selling.
That is to accept payment, and send a CD. A great resource for having the CD manufactured is discmakers.com (many big names use these guys, as do we).

- CafePress also allows you to upload/send your music files (last time I checked, on a copied master), and they will burn/print/manufacture/list your CD, as well as allow audio short samples of the songs you choose.

I don't know if the cafepress CDs are available only to premium shop owners, or if the free shop owners can offer CDs too.

MP3.com, etc typically all follow the first scenerio, except they take the order, you send the CD.

Mark, yes I do know you are in a band, so its no surprise you gave me a couple of great links - thanks! The links are very useful. Have you been selling your own music over the Internet, be it in MP3 format or CD format?

Not currently. Although we have some outlets in place (both online, and off), we're still working on our first CD.

In regards to your friend's band however, we do have some great US contacts, and would be happy to help spread the word, if/when the time comes.

Certainly a good idea, Artashes...

That said, why don't they just set up some kind of simple e-commerce solution, perhaps via PayPal and combine it with a blog about their band/music? Best of 'many' worlds there -- they can network with their fans, grow their fanbase, probably get linked in a variety of places, and also sell their music.

I think it's possible to set up PayPal to automatically deliver links to content (i.e. ebooks, music, etc.) -- if not by default, than by using the API? (Actually, can anyone confirm that, or confirm is there is some software available to do that, because I'm thinking of setting up something of the like for one of my non-hosting-related projects.)

Reece, PayPal does make this possible with their IPN service. That is, for web content. So if they were planning to sell MP3s then that would be a great solution. If it were CDs or material technology for their music, they wouldn't be able to do automated orders of course.

This is why it really depends on which venue they want to use to sell their music.

you could also sell locally? i know its not what you asked.. but alot of stores now days sell local music, and give whom ever the profit
