Mp3/music hosting for musicians or bands?

I am sure that at least some of you should still remember the late great music website, mp3.com which had hosted thousands(maybe even a million at it's peak) webpages for musicians and bands, along with some mp3 files, that could usually be downloaded for free. What I am looking for is a music host for musicians, where I could have at least over like 1 GB of webspace for free or a low price. I know of a few music hosts out there, but I am looking to maybe find a better one. Thanks!
 
James, could you please specify whether you are looking to host a particular band's music in order to promote it (ex: MySpace, imeem, etc) or run a site like mp3.com or imeem or purevolume.com?

First is easy and there are plenty of socially-focused networks that might allow you to promote a band, even offer downloads for free or a fee. However, the second one is a bit different ballgame.

I had been looking for the latter, although I have yet to find any sites that matched up to how mp3.com used to do things, although Pure Volume is a fairly good site as well. Does anyone know of some other sites along those lines, which I could check out?

Mp3.com used to offer some free mp3's, pay mp3's, and some CDR's for a low price, with all the bands music on it.
 
Try posting in the request area...You might get some offers and maybe more info on what your looking for. Also, telling all of us here what your needs are will help us in determining, and recommending a good host.
 
I'm not familiar with music hosts myself. I take it you don't want to go through the process of setting up some sort of a script to deal with the hosting of the mp3's for your band? You just want something like here it is, and it works out of the box for free or for a very low price? Kind of like myspace is just a free blog /network system that works for free right after signing up?

Umm, I was actually looking for free hosting as I mentioned at the start of this thread. I think the way mp3.com used to do things is that they would take a portion of your CD profits, in exchange for providing the hosting and burning the CDR's.
 
So wait, are you saying that I would get profit or you would, or we both would? Also is Ziddu a site that you own, or just one that you know about?

It sounds to me like you are looking for a site to host & sell your bands music. And then the site takes a percentage of your sales as payment for the hosting. These kinds of sites are usually called Distributors and there are many depending on what kind of music you are looking to sell.

The obvious ones are I Tunes shop, Beatport, Juno, Digital Tunes, there are many morethat will be specific to your music style. Im not sure which kind of music you are selling, but you will need to research and find the best distro for your music, to maximise your sales. Hope this helps :)
 
WebMistress: Thank you, but I don't know if it's a distributor that I would want or not. Free hosting would be much preferred to a profit percentage, especially since I don't know how well my music would sell, and it would also depend on how big of a percentage they would expect, since I need to make some money as well. Also the site would have to be willing to sell the music on CD, and not just mp3 only, although i'd use both options.

Well... in that case, I thank you for the information :)

I will at least take the time to look into that host, and see what I can find out about them, but I will still be searching for other hosts as well.
 
Thank you, although I still haven't made up my mind on what exactly I am going to. Thank you to everyone who has made suggestions so far, and feel free to offer any others that you can think of :)
 
There was a site called-I think it was something like peoplesmusicstore.com or something like that. I had a friend who sold a few albums through them, but again it was another profit share job. That said they sold pretty well so it was worth it.
 
I have never heard of People Music Store before, but I would be interested to see if their still around. Would you by any chance know how much of a percentage they took in payment, or you aren't sure?
