Just wanted to add that I use FileZilla, but mainly only for secure connections as an alternative to SSH.
I think the GUI could be improved but it's not too bad

I think so too... But a good piece of code shouldn't be beatyful, well that's my $0.02

I use it almost exclusively now.

I always used ws-ftp, but when I was writing a faq for my site recently I found out they didn't offer the free version anymore, so I started using filezilla - no problems with it so far.
