mosso.com VS hostgator

We have an oscommerce website and will be getting high traffic next month, we want to move our site from Yahoo hosting because their site cannot handle high traffic (over 100,000 hits a day because they shut down your site thinking it's an attack) :crash:.

So we want to move our site to a dedicated server and have narrowed it down to mosso.com or hostgator. Does anyone have any experience or insight as to which is better? The main objective of the hosting service should be to handle very high amounts of traffic ( ie. over 500,000 hits a day ) and also handle an oscommerce cart smoothly ( ie emails, transactions, etc ).

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Best,
Deb

Hi Deb,

500,000 hits a day is not considered a large load so I am surprised Yahoo! can't handle it.

While I know Mosso and HostGator both have good reputation, they are really not e-commerce oriented. HostGator can handle the load, but do you want to host an important ecommerce site in a regular shared environment? Mosso is designed more for resellers and provide a solution way more complex. I'd say you need to find a web provider that is specializing in ecommerce hosting so they not only understand how critical it is for you to stay online, but can also assist you in times when you need help.

For example, I know that one of our members here (www.handsonwebhosting.com) specializes in this type of hosting, however they really focus on X-Cart hosting more than OSCommerce.

I do not have direct experience with any of the mentioned hosting companies though.

Comparing mosso to hostgator seems like comparing apples to oranges.... mosso is a clustered setup which focus & strives for very high uptime brought to you by the oh so welll known Rack Space... and HostGator is well....the marketing king.

Search around for reviews for both of em however, I'm sure either would be capable of hosting your website(s)

Regardless of any questionable ethics or marketing crap, Host Gator is a fairly capable web host for the money you spend on it, but it really would depend on what exactly your site is, and what you are planning to do with it in the future.

There are a ton of hosts out there that would gladly take on the traffic you are expecting. The choice is completely up to you.

You can go for Hostgator which is extremely well known or Mosso which has has some nice things said about them.

The amount of traffic your getting is tremendous, and your saying that its only going to go up,so the thing that any one would recommend is upping your specs.

I have never heard of mosso, have heard of hostgator and even used it. They are great but if yahoo suspends your account for high usage then hostgator will probably too. Your options maybe to find a host that doesn't oversell or move to a vps.

man 500,000 hits a day is a huge traffic,
i think Hostgator or thePlanet could be good for you,
for those amount of visits you need the most reliable company, you should go with companies with %99.99 or even %100 uptime without connection failure , in Feb Hostgator uptime was 100,

also consider server speed and response time ,

man 500,000 hits a day is a huge traffic,

A hit is a collection of all files being pulled off a website. If I have 8 layout detail images and 3 content images as part of each page on my site, then 1 visitor will generate 8+3+1 (html/php/etc page) = 12 hits. If that visitor loads just 5 pages of my website, he generated 60 hits. And that's the most basic sample - as most sites run a lot more graphical and other elements. Plus, don't forget search engine bots that "hit" everything over and over again. So that 500,000 hits might as well translate to 2-3k visitors daily.

SavvyChick, think twice before you go with cloud hosting. Yes, it's true that the technology had been around for some time but it's worth noting that security standardization has not come to the cloud. There are certain problems with cloud hosting remained unsolved till now (example: vulnerabilities of virtualization software, which can be exploited by malicious users).

500,000 hits is not a huge numbers and I'm sure a Hostgator shared hosting account can solve your problem. If I were you, I'll rather go with the safer option.

On the other hand, in case you insist cloud hosting, WebHostingUnleashed run a nice list of upcoming cloud hosting companies. Have a look: http://www.webhostingunleashed.com/features/cloud-hosting-providers-081908/
