Monitoring Traffic usage..

Hi there everyone

I have a question, I want to start offering colocation and dedicated servers (I buy them, so not some other ISP and I resell)... And I have a RACK... Now I place the servers in there... Say I want to give a few dedicated 100GB traffic (monthly)... how am I going to monitor this? / cap this?

Get managed switches. All you need for the monitoring is an SNMP-enabled switch (HP 2524, Cisco 2924 (I think), Dell 3024). To cap connections, you'll need a (Layer 3?) switch, which are more dinero.

Someone correct me if it's not Layer 3. We don't have any Layer 3s, so I can't recommend any.

Do you have any instructions on how to do this with a Cisco 2924? I got one here and never got that far into it.

We don't have a 2924 (or any Cisco switch), but I've heard from others the 2900 series has SNMP capabilities.

I would be interested in anyone that has played with this type of monitoring (SNMP or whatever) to get ahold of me on what to do to use it!

I would love to have a box that does nothing but monitor traffic by IP or site. Any suggestions?

Check out www.mrtg.org. It's pretty easy to get it to query an SMTP device for information.
