Max users on a server

Hi
How many users would you recommend to place on a server?
If the average account was 500mb space with 5gb transfer how many should I sell per server?

Well I would say to leave some room on the server for upgrades, and not to oversell because that can get you in a lot of trouble.. I probaly wouldnt fill my server much more than 1/2 -> 3/4 at tops..

That totally left my mind...I was mainly thinking of not selling everything to fill it up for resources but I didnt even think about upgrade space for customers

Best way to judge how many client you can place on a server is by watching the server load.

Never base the amount of space is used. I have one site that uses 250MB but needed a entire server to themselves.

But if clients start with small sites and then grow a lot bigger, then you could end up having too many sites with a server load which is too high

But your still basing it off server load. If you have 100 clients (120-140 I get) and the server load is around .10-.40 and then it shoots up and stays at 1.0-2.0 you find the client, inform the client they need to be moved and remove the client on to a less populated server.

You cannot simply say, "Well, I'm not going to put more than 1,000 accounts on this server!" - because it just does not work that way. You really need to take into account all other aspects.

What are the server specs? How much bandwidth? How big will each site be? What will the server load be? Will there be only HTML sites or also large PHP and mySQL database driven sites?


There is much more to it when working out how many clients to put on one server...

Totally agree with eMax and Anjay's comments. Here's an example: I have a server w/50; another one w/200+ and growing. My matrix:

Server Load
Dynamic/Static
Bandwidth
Large DB's
Space

I've always asked migrating reseller customers their current traffic just to get a feel of what they do, but I have also noticed that some of them don't tell the truth or, errr, exaggerate.
