Marketing Strategy - business network to inhouse colocation?

How would one convince a business that has a private network set up, to migrate their servers to a data center, beyond the single point of failure issue with their connection to the Internet?

That's a good question, I suppose it depends on how your customer's current setup has been going for them. Have they been having problems with it? If so it would make it easier to convince them.

There are any number of ways you can approach this. One is security. I know that a large number of private on-site business networks are NOT in a secure environment. In fact, many of them are simply installed in small rooms, closets and so on - with access from every employee and even cleaning personnel. I've seen where a UPS delivery person dislodged a T1 connection to where it brought down the entire company.

Then you have the possibility of natural disasters like fires, floods, tornadoes and so on. Would it help to point out what's possible in a data center versus the infrastructure they have in place onsite?

Its always going to boil down to your client's understanding of these two but most importantly is he has been having any issues with his current set up. Onething that stays almost a constant with most VPN is that they tend to be less secure than the Data Centre set up. If your client is hell bent on to security then that might be a good entry point.
