Marketers vs. Designers/Programmers

Do you guys feel sometimes that designers and programmers/developers make less money than marketers? I read all the time how some bozos get a hold of incredible sums of money by doing marketing. At that times I'm wondering am I an idiot for doing logos and business cards instead of taking upon marketing?!

I think everybody must work there he/she fits best. If you like design, drawing - be a designer.
If you like everyday sit and think how to make that or another website popular, analyze data, learn and learn about it - be a marketer.
Go there your passion goes, and you will find your way in life, do not hunt money. Because money are coming to you, only when you are happy (lottery too :D )

Financial gain is a huge consideration in selecting a career path. I would agree to be happy you should follow your passion, but sometimes that doesn't pay the bills.

So it means that there is needed to do that your passion would pay bills (or similar activity to your passion)

I couldn't agree more. Sometimes I feel that whenever I start to work something I like, I need more money I need to switch jobs in order to make ends meet. I hate it!

Lots of people will make more money that you do - that's part of how the world works. People in the web design market often attribute themselves to making 20-50k per year, however I know plenty of designers (1 man shops) that make 500k+ each year, and a number of 2 and 3 man shops making more than 5 million a year.

How you ask? It comes down to the market and their target clientele. Many of them work on Government sites and not mom & pop sites. I've been involved in some large web development projects that spanned several years and well into the 500k range on a SINGLE design project. Granted the money didn't all go to me, but when you're dealing with corporations, they'll rarely go with a one man shop.

Do people make money in affiliate marketing? Sure do. Requires work though.

So much like you can say that these guys make their money doing that - doctors and lawyers make a lot of money doing what they have spent years learning.

What you put in is what you get out. If you put in 100%, you'll get 100% reward - if not, you need to bring in another person to show you what you're doing wrong and not getting 100% of what you believe you're due.

Hard work my friend - a lot of hard work (in any business).

Sounds fair and true. But, maybe I should have said that I was talking about average, "mom & pop" sites and marketing jobs available for average people.

I too have a friend in Toronto who is a flash designer. His company has projects ranging from 10k up to 200k. But all due to certain clientele.

I suggest doing something you love to do. Remember money is not everything in life. Obviously you need enough to survive but your happiness and health ar things to consider when making decisions like this.

Hm, c'mon that must be the cheesiest story there is. I think that people who don't have enough money wouldn't appreciate any of this. Having the opportunity to do what you love is NOT an option for many.

Definitely Mraketers earn more money than designers because designers design websites to sell while marketers sells through websites.

Nope. Only the good marketers enjoy good money. But if you are a good designer or programmer, you can earn good money too.

Isn't $80k annual income not enough?

One of my friends has a site that has a PR5 or is already 6 now I don't remember. But he doesn't know anything about marketing, although his site is backlinked quite a bit, because of the credit links that he gets from designed sites. Maybe this is off-topic but I wanted to say how some designers know nothing about marketing.

I couldn't agree more to that! It's a matter of being skillfull or not. And that also depends on your strategy. There are some marketers who doesn't earn as much because of poor strategy.

In general, wouldn't you say "design teams" tend to land higher paying projects versus one man operations? In Marketing, I think one key person can turn an entire operation around.
