Managed Servers

How many of you have a "managed" server. Meaning all hardware, software etc.. is managed by someone else or even the data center. I've worked with one company, that had someone manage their servers. All maintainence and upgrades were done by them. Of course, it's going to bring the cost level up, but how many people here manage their own servers?

I do manage my own server. It makes a lot more sense to me to get a top configuration server from LT for around $300 than paying threee times that much for same from rackspace. ofcourse it depends on the level of your technical expretise.

I have a managed server and yes it turns out little expensive but then i can spare my time and save my tensions for my job. In a way it pays off because i can use time and resources towards my online job and not worry about server and security.

I also use a managed dedi and I like it through I have to pay for it but it saves my time much.

I agree with the general concensus around here. Managed servers are good for two situations:

1. You don't want (or don't have the time) to do the work, or
2. You don't know how to do the work

Both are excellent reasons to leave the dog work of upgrades and patches to other parties. However, as pointed out by others, you'll generally pay for it.

It's a trade off. Different for each person.

If you want to be tension free you can always opt for the managed server, definately the cost for the same would increase.

Pretty simple,

You wanna manage your own sever ? Then you better have the technical expertise required, and you should be willing to invest lot of time

And if you cant, then your better out source your sever management work to a person/company who are specialized in providing such services.

Managed services are preffered. We currently have a level 2 tech support, but he ain't online 24/7 to immediately notice if a service is down and fix it.
So we hired a company to do that as well as server management and it is worth it 100%!

Those who have enough knowledge to manage servers may do it. But many people who are skilful enough in server administration prefer someone else to manage their machines if they are focused in business. It is always worth to pay for expertise.

We manage our own servers, but one of the first things we do is have a third party security company come in and secure it. We then primarily use the cPanel update system to keep the system up to date, with some other routine maintenance stuff thrown in to boot.

The thing to be concerned with about Managed hosting is what, exactly, is managed. It can mean a lot of different things. Does it includes updates and if so, updates of what and how often. Does it include upgrades? Again, if so, of what applications and how often. Does it only include the stuff that came installed on the server or stuff that I will install as well?

Lots of questions.

With manged hosting it is always worth checking out what exactly is covered as they may not do everything you are needing we manage all our own systems ranging from monitoring, updates, backups etc allot of this can be made automated so you don't need to watch everything 24/7 other than ensuring all systems are online and operating correctly.

Going for dedicated server with managed services is always fruitful as it saves ur time and all responsibilities of managing the server is goes to service provider, so it is very important to choose a good service provider who can manage ur server efficiently otherwise all favours get reverse. So be careful while choosing a service provider.

Having a quality web hosting provider is the most essential thing because he is the guarantee of your successful business. I tried out a lot of hosting companies but I have chosen the one (**************.com) and I'm happy with it.

1.Advantages More Time to dedicate to you bottom line Sales
sure the costs may be more but time is money :)

We manage all our clients dedicated/vps servers they could not be more happy about it :)

Getting a managed server is good when you dont have a proper technical staff. As everything is managed by Hosting provider and u can utilize your time in grabing new clients

Going for a managed server always gives you the ability to focus on other aspects of your business.
I'm hosted with ************, they offer fully managed through helpdesk Linux servers, seems like they have unmanaged offers, but it's Windows.

Similar here. we have level 3 fully managed. Some really amazing guys that can sort out the worst nightmares.

Gives us time to handle all the mundane client support issues which are what brings happy customers. That personal service & hand holding with the issues you would think anyone with a web site would know how to do... even answer questions fully covered step-by-step in our videos. :crash:

That way the hardware keeps purring and we have time to devote to being people friendly ...

It often happens that the company youare buying server management services from outsource them from the third-party. Isn't it the case with ************?

I definitely think that using a managed server makes sense....because the bottomline of your business should be sales....if your customers are happy, then you are in good shape. If you seem to be spending most of your time in managing your own server, then its time you opted for a managed server.

Although the vendor has to be reliable.
