managed or unmanaged dedicated server?

If you own a medium-sized company, which type of dedicated server would you prefer, managed or unmanaged?

Personally, I'd always go for managed because I am a complete monkey when it comes to server-related work.

However, in the case of a medium-sized company, it may depend if you have a dedicated internal IT resource(s) that may be more than capable, or even preferring the unmanaged option.

The size of the company is not so important, it is important whether the company has a qualified person who can administer the server.
If there is such a person, then of course choose an unmanaged server, it is cheaper. But if there is no standing person - then only full administration, to avoid problems in the future.

If you’ve got a solid dev or IT team that knows their way around SSH, firewalls, and updates - go unmanaged. You save cash and get full control. But if your team is stretched thin or doesn’t specialize in infrastructure, managed is the way to go. Someone else handles the headaches like security patches, monitoring, and reboots when stuff goes sideways.

It’s not just about budget - it’s about how much time and skill you’ve got to babysit a box. Would I run unmanaged? Only if I had someone on call for 3 AM meltdowns 😅

That really depends on how much experience you have managing a server. Do you have someone with experience to keep your services online and secure? Do you have the time to do it yourself? Most management plans are usually pretty cost effective vs the amount of time you need to put in.
