Is vBulletin too expensive?

Do you think vBulletin is too expensive?
It is a good forum but I dont think it should cost so much.
It costs $160 for a license to run one forum on one site with no limit on how long you can run it.
You get free upgrades for a year, once this year has run out, you have to pay another $30 each year for the upgrades.

OR

You can pay $85 for a leased license which means you can run one forum on one site for one year, after the year, you must either pay another $80 or else buy an owned license.

I think they are taking the rip out of it...
They have made a fortune from it and I think they should lower their price a bit or else change it so you dont have to pay $30 every year for updates or maybe let you run more than one forum with an owned license, just something that means you can do more with your license.

They also charge $130 if you want the forum installed, anyone that has installed it knows its a matter of minutes to install a vBulletin and you dont need to be experienced to install yourself, even if you have a few problems lots of people can help you out.
The install only includes installed a new forum, not importing a database, converting from another board, installing skins etc. which can be a lot harder than just installing the board.

I think invision is really movign up in the forum world and
at the minute its free but i think they will start charging for it in the future.
Invision tried to buy out phpbb around a month ago i think so maybe they were trying to get phpbb because it would be competition to invision if it went premium?

Just some things for you to think about :)

Well maybe some of us that have webhosting businesses and even the ones without could donate to a HTnet fund, and hopefully raise a nice chunk for the vBulletin liscense, making it cheaper for you.

I like vBulletin alot, but I would hate to see you pay all that money yourself, that is alot of money :S

I think vBulletin would be better for this website, I like it a bit better.

So I will help you out as much as I can, and as always, keep refering new clients ;)

Thanks a lot GordyMac :)
I am hoping to get vBulletin for this site later when it has grown more.
Even if no-one contributes towards it thats no problem, i will still buy a license in the future for the site but thanks again :)

Don't even worry about it, anything I can do to help out.

Even if nobody else donates towards vBulletin, I know I will donate as much as a I can spare for sure, any estimation when you will be getting vBulletin? I know when the site picks up, but do you see it here say February for example?

Good to set rough dates to give the rest of us some idea, that is, of course, if you have an idea yourself :)

At the minute I have been thinking about getting it when there are around 5000 posts on the forum.
So just whenever it reaches somewhere near that :)
Thank you also XSecure!
Really appreciate you both offer to help out!
John

yeah thats right.
You can convert from invision to vBulletin.
I will just backup everything before i do the convert anyway, even if something goes wrong the forum can be reverted back to the way it was or the convert restarted, shouldnt be any problems with converting it though.
