Is the shared hosting market saturated?

With pretty much every large internet services company performing this action it is getting tougher to garner customers in this market. I mean mysql is now doing hosting.

The short answer: it depends.

The global budget shared hosting market is saturated, but there are many niche markets that are still wide open. Offer a quality service at a fair price, and there is still room for new companies in the hosting market.

As a whole the market is pretty saturated. The best way to get in is to find a niche market and advertise to that niche market. If you just start a general webhosting company it is very hard. Local advertising and help can also make it not as bad. I bet you could get a lot of people to sign up for hosting if you helped them create a very basic website and talked with them for a bit.

There is a lot of rubbish on the market and as the market matures clients will demand higher levels of service etc., and will have to pay to get it

At the moment the market is saturated with resellers overselling everything. As the majority of them are not relying on hosting for their income and have made zero infrastructural investment it is relatively easy for them to do so. The fact that they are incapable of offering the kind of service that larger business and government agencies require is probably not relevant to them at this juncture.
As the clientele's understanding grows so will their demands and a lot of these "companies" will vanish.
It's already happening.

It's saturated, yes. However, there is always money to be made and it just depends how clever/determined you are. You could approach the market the right way by targeting a specific niche and become an overnight success or you could just be another "template" seller with a handful of customers that is out of business by the years end.

A well developed business plan is what you need to devise before even thinking about entering the hosting business. It's far easier to compete in a smaller niche market than offering hosting to the average joe.

Greetings for you all,
I agree with PTNHosting. In my country, our business runs very well because we know local market better. But if we enter international market, I dont think we can make it better.

You have any tips you can give me for targeting the local market?
Simply walk into the local mom and pop shops with brochues and business cards in hand. Ask to speak to the owner and set a meeting date that you can sit down and talk with them. You would be amazed how much small businesses would appreciate this.

It is saturated dude, but if you start in the brick and mortar world you can get yourself flying off, lots of my customers are recommending my reseller hosting, I am a webmaster but i do listen to my clients carefully and understand what they need. Try targeting a specific market, and dont do what the big boys does, coz even now if you got lots of money its hard to compete with them. I believe that trust makes a different rather than overselling and making it out like hotcakes.

Good Luck.

Indeed the market is saturated, fortunatley most hosts today dont have a clue what they are doing... With the comming of faster web connections many of the shared hosts who are severly over selling their servers will be in trouble... most of my online sales comes form people who were already hosted elsewhere but were not satisfied with the service... this will get worse as time goes on.

The best market is usually your local market, prices can be set much higher and profits certainly come easier with offline marketing. You can get your name out locally very cheap compared to trying to market online and compete with all the "too good to be true" offers.

Good Luck'

In a word Yes, I belive the problem started with the advent of reseller accounts... It seems today everyones a host.. It's crazy you can essentially setup a web hosting for less than 15$ per month.

True eleven the market has become very cheap and saturated but there are alot of clowns around who really don't have a clue as too what they are doing as far as hosting that's why most people are sticking with the bigger comapanies who are expensive and supposingly quality but too say the least they are lacking in customer service aswell!!

The Market is Full of IDIOTS!!
