Is One Auction Site as Bad as The Others?

I hear a lot of bad things about selling hosting on ebay. Especially those unlimited Alpha Reseller accounts. I am not a Linux host, but I am somewhat familiar with that type of plan.

But I can't figure out: I only hear about ebay. Is there a problem with ebay, or is the problem selling hosting on auction sites in general and ebay just happens to be the biggest one?

There is nothing wrong with auction sites.
There is nothing wrong with selling hosting on any auction site.
There is a problem with selling unlimited hosting plans anywhere.
 
Well, I think I'll give it a shot then. As you know, I don't believe one has to use artificial or arbitrary quotas in their hosting plans, so I won't be.

After reading some of the posts on the board there seems to be quite a target there. If different auction sites are all about the same, I'll go ahead and start with the biggest I suppose.

The auction sites are pretty much all the same.
The pretty much always attract the lowest form of host.
Get rich quick operators that typical over promise and under deliver.
Nothing new here. It has been this way for years.
Some hosts care little about ethics and think that auction sites are just the next extension of the Barnum and Bailey theory of there is a sucker born every minute.

Perhaps there are some legit hosts that use auction sites but I can't imagine how a legitimate service business, who has already determined what their cost of operations are and what their minimum price would have to be to make a reasonable profit would want to rely on a bidder to determine their cost of business.

I have been hosting since 1999 and used to use auctions sites for specials twice a year, but always using fixed price auctions. But as the economy dropped and more people with very little to spend, i found myself using auctions sites more often. The prices i list on auctions still make me a reasonable profit.
 
I thought this was about auction sites in general. It seems it is about hosts using auction sites. In my personal opinion this is a bad idea. I would not buy hosting this way at all. Auction sites to me screen low quality or cheap. Specially after all the issues I have had with ebay and a few other auction sites. Main issue is getting bootlegged stuff or the one time I bought a web item on ebay I found the only item I got was free any way. Oh that upset me a lot.
Besides if I am buying a hosting plan on ebay how would I know it is actually from the host and not from some one trying to rip me off? Which I honestly see happening a lot.

we always places a link to our TOS and order link in our listings, so if anyone wants they can direct to our website, but yes i understand what you are saying. I have seen many hosting listings on ebay where the actual host (if you can call them that) dont even have a website or even anything like WHMCS. so what you get is cpanel login details for cpanel/WHM and an email for support (which is usually a gmail address).
We get a good few clients from ebay and some are surprised we have a website and a proper support system
