Is it just me or .... ???

I don't understand why some web hosts do it.

Why do some of them insist on advertising themselves as "cheap".

To me, describing their company or their prices as "cheap" leaves me with a totally negative impression of what I can expect from them and their service.

I agree with including the word "cheap" in their Meta Tag keywords ... but not in their advertising or on any of their web site pages.

Economical ... Inexpensive ... easily affordable .... those are positive descriptions. But "cheap" ... nope, no way no how do I feel it should ever be used or has any place on a company's pages or in their advertising or in their information.

There are other definitions of the word ... but the definition the word "cheap" brings to mind first to me is ...

from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary - of inferior quality or worth : TAWDRY, SLEAZY b : contemptible because of lack of any fine, lofty, or redeeming qualities c : STINGY

I wouldn't think any company would want to run the risk that even ONE potential customer avoided their site because of the negative impressions conjured up by the use of just one word. Especially when there are so many other words that could be used instead. If the author of the pages can't think of those other words ... there is always the online free Thesaurus'.

So ... am I the only one who views the word "cheap" in this way?? Or am I the only one?

Peter

Nah, when I see the word cheap it means they have low prices. Still, though, if a webhost is trying to beat the competition by price, then we all know how 'cheap' they really are.

Peter,
I agree whole heartedly. In my business classes, English classes, that "cheap" is not a word that you want associated with yourself or your business.

Dubs, that might be how you see the word, but trust me. If you were to walk into a local business who wanted to create a contact for 3 years of service from you rated at $600/month and on even one slide or in one sentence you used the word "cheap". No matter how awesome your services were, I can promise you that they would reconsider doing business with you for the very reasons Peter described above.

Imagine meeting a beautiful girl in a bar...

Girl: So... what kind of business are you in?
You: I run a cheap web hosting company that provides cheap solutions, because that is what the market expects from me - to be cheap. So... do you want to go out sometime?

John,
I cant agree with you more. I may have been a little unclear, but what I meant was, for example, if I see a low priced item in a store, I think of it as cheap. When I use it to describe things, like businesses, I think it is, as Peter said, like 'sleazy.'

If I met a beautiful girl in a bar, I'd wonder how the hell that happened.

Secondly, yeah I agree, referring to yourself as cheap is not a good way to get a night of baby oil and belly shots. :P

If I were a host I wouldn't present my services on my site as "cheap", but I might get some Google ads for "cheap hosting" and include those words in the ad itself. If that's what the customer is looking for, that's the word I'll be using. :)
