I thought I'd seen it all.

Well, I guess it never ends.
Just when I thought I had seen all the sleeze this industry has to offer I came across a site that offers 5000 sites each with 750mb space and 20gb tranfer all for $50 a month.

I guess ethics just are not an issue any more in the hosting industry.
It makes me sad.

Sad but true, this is whats happening to the idustry. People who don't know how to run a real company run stupid gimmicks like this and it is RUINING the industry.

Reasons like the above are why I stopped running my own hosting company. I'm afraid there are some serious issues in the industry. There are scams and problems with all industries, of course, but web hosting seems to have more than their fair share. I don't think it will ever stop (unless regulation or customer eduction increases) and many of these liars and scammers are starting to make it. Witness the larger companies that have been offering 500 GB of transfer for $7.97 and so on for the past few years.

Blue, what do you mean "5000 sites"? The offer includes ability to host 5000 web sites with those requirements for $50 altogether?

I think he means the plan allows you to host 5000 websites each with 750mb space and 20gb tranfer.

In total about 100000 gb transfer and 3750 gb of disk space.

Who has 5000 websites that they need hosted? Secondly what's the big deal, my computer at home has 31337 gb of disk space ;-)

However 100000 gb is worrysome 1 million gigabytes of transfer is insane, I bet google doesn't even get that close (I could be wrong)

You have 31 terabytes of drive space on your home computer?

Even if that were true, I'm guessing it cost somewhat more than $50.

Blue,
I think he was trying to be witty. 31137 is suppose to spell, "Elite", even though if the 3 is an "E" it would be spelt "Eliet" instead of elite.

Someday

Hi,

I think that someday the industry will have a revolution and this will all change. What I find is that customer service, honesty, and respect goes further with customers then price. You just have to show them that from step 1. Yes, some clients are going to automaticly see something like this and click and sign up. A couple months later they will be running to us "Good" host that they will have no worries fromt here. :)

The industry will change and mature. Just like a kid it takes time. The industry is still growing by leaps and bounds. Don't forget this.

The industry will change, yes, but it is changing for the worse.
All you need to do is look at some of the big providers to see that.

Godaddy 20gb space and 1000gb transfer for $15.96/month
1&1 30gb space and 1500gb transfer for $19.99/month

The list goes on and it's getting worse.

Agreed Blue. I've been on the inside and outside for years now and looking back I can say that the industry does appear to be changing for the worse.

Technology is improving daily and costs are coming down each day. This has lowered costs for many hosts in the form of dedicated server providers and other more affordable services for small businesses. This is normal for virtually any industry - technology commonly progresses as prices steadily decrease.

However, for the hosting industry, it has also meant larger and larger scams. Blue pointed out some of the "big boys" that are ultimately running the same exact scheme that these unlimited and unmetered hosts are doing. That's not a good sign.

It is pretty aweful - my only real surprise is that it's GoDaddy and 1&1 doing this crap now, not just the fly-by-night hosting operations. No good.

Corey, I think we* shouldn't be really bothered by this since GoDaddy has started to receive negative reviews all over the web.

*By WE, I mean those who run web hosting companies.

Best,
