I have a couple questions!!

I am hoping to purchase some hosting shortly and have done a little research. It is hard to pick a particular host as everbody seems to have a reason NOT to pick every host!

I was going to ask which is the most popular host etc but from reading through the threads people don't seem to be able to answer that.

Here is a couple of newbie questions that I am hoping you can answer:

1. Why do people think that you need to pay more for less to get quality?? Surely paying more is most cases just means you are being ripped off!!

2. How can you tell how much bandwidth you will need?

3. If a host is offering a bandwidth of 20GB a month, approximately how many visitors does that allow?? (just viewing pages, no downloads)

4. What do people mean by over selling exactly?? Do people have experience of hosts not living up to their standards?

5. If a host says we offer unlimited bandwidth, can they do this?

6. When they say you can host multiple domains, does that mean all your domains point to the same site or is it like having several different sites on one host?

7. I know alot of the "top 10 hosts" sites are paid off so could you suggest who you feel are the big guns in the hosting industry??

Thanks in advance for your help.

1. That is not the case at all. In some cases, just like in any other business, there are exceptions to the rule, but there is a very direct correlation with price and service quality in most cases.

2. You need to try and forcast how much traffic your site will receive. For instance, if you have a website that is 30mb in size and the average visitor views 15mb of that site you would multiply 15mb by your forcast traffic. ie: 1000 visitors per month would be 15000mb of traffic.

3. If you have images on a page and it is viewed then it is the equivilent to a download the same size of the image. If your home page has 300k of images and html then every time someone visits that page you will use 300k of transfer. If your pages are strickly html with no images then 20gb of transfer will be enough for many thousands of visitors.

4. Overselling means that the host is selling beyond what they are capable of offering. It is very common and can certainly result in poor service and disruptions. Search this and other forums and you will find many, many examples of people who lost their site or had frequent down time. You will also find that in 99% of these cases the host in question was overselling their services.

5. No. Unlimited bandwidth does not exist. A host who is offering this is not being honest. They should be avoided at all costs if you have a mission critical site. I can't imagine anyone wanting to do business with any company that feels the need to lie to potential customers in order to get their business.

6. In most cases if multiple domain support is offered it means that all of the domains will have their own web space.

7. The "Big Guns" are companies like One and One, Verizon, Pair etc. Being big is not guarantee of quality service but you can make your own determination of that by reading reviews. As for the hosting directories, in the vast majority of cases you will find that there is a direct correlation between how many times you see a host listed in the "top 10" on these sites with the number of customer complaints about the company.

1. Why do people think that you need to pay more for less to get quality?? Surely paying more is most cases just means you are being ripped off!!

They do not think it they know it. It takes going through several bad experience with .99/month hosting companies to realize that maybe there is something more to hosting. If you think about it good servers cost $140.00 - $240.00/month. That maybe covers a Pentium 4 3.0 GHZ with HT technology. Dual 120 GB hard drives, and 2,000 GB worth of bandwdith.

Support people:
Level 1: $400.00/month - outsourced much more when in house I know
Level 2: $700.00/month
Level 3: $900.00/month
Sales: $400.00
Billing: $400.00

Software: eSupport $29.95/month moderbill: $24.95/month

Advertising Expense: $500.00/month

Phone Support: $300.00/month

Support Demo Subscription (vito, that is totally you): $25.00

Miscellaneous: $100.00

Total: $3,019.90 (left Level 3 out because of Data Center)

$3,019.90/$0.99 = 3050

We then realize we need 4 more servers to support this. In addition a few more tech guys. Do you see why cheap hosts do not succeed usually? As much as people may think that networks, people, and servers are cheap they are not. Someone got the bright idea of selling hosting for $0.99 to make a quick buck and screwed everyone else up.

2. How can you tell how much bandwidth you will need?

Take the number of files times it by their size and then once again by how many visitors you estimate.

3. If a host is offering a bandwidth of 20GB a month, approximately how many visitors does that allow?? (just viewing pages, no downloads)

20,000 mb/100 kb file = 20,000 views per month.

4. What do people mean by over selling exactly?? Do people have experience of hosts not living up to their standards?

Going back to example 1, people sell to many accounts on the server so their server can no longer handle it, neither can their network, or their support personal. Yes, you can oversell support people as well. There has been many cases when host such someone off because of the fact they were using large amounts of resource with in their limits purchased but it was causing issues for the host.

5. If a host says we offer unlimited bandwidth, can they do this?

No, nothing in the world is unlimited. Cables, routers, networks, and servers can only do so much. Is there unlimited gas for your car?

6. When they say you can host multiple domains, does that mean all your domains point to the same site or is it like having several different sites on one host?

It depends on what type of hosting it is. Multiple domains typically stands for you can host multiple domains on one account. Where as in reseller hosting allows you to have multiple domains and control panels for each.

7. I know alot of the "top 10 hosts" sites are paid off so could you suggest who you feel are the big guns in the hosting industry??

Hi all
The truth for some reason, many think that if we shall pay many money that we much we shall receive, but we are mistaken in many case :disagree:
I too hardly was not mistaken but me in time have stopped
And I stop on Tulip Systems and me have very much carried, I receive all from them that is necessary for me :)
I wish all of good luck

This topic is being beaten to death on a number of the WebHosting forums now.

If you want a quality service then you aregoing to have to pay more for it, it's like buying a new car, getting a Skoda and expecting itto perform like a Ferrari, it's just not going to happen!

In my experience (and probably many other peoples too), you get what you pay for and the cheap hosts usually oversell, the service degrades and you end up switching in the end to a decent host who manages their servers and clients properly.

It's personal choice at the end of the day but we would always pay more for a quality and reliable service even if it meant we did lose some features, most of which offered by hosts today we wouldn't use anyhow.

Anyway if we pay that and should receive more from owners :)
But happen and disappointment when from them we receive only a part of that of that they to us offered in the beginning :rolleyes2
On it to have to search, but it is possible and we shall find such company from which are happy and they are prefer good web hosting  :)
