guys,

I am a newbie and need to know where to start?..

I would like to host my website on my server, what I need to do that?

advise me please!

I have linux fedora.. is it okay?..

ummmmmmmm.. please tell me where to start?

thank you

Here's another for dynatic IPs.
http://www.no-ip.com/

You don't need to use Linux to have your own host server.
Steps to take.

1. Ask your ISP if you are allowed to.
2. If yes, install IIS (assuming you are using either XP or 2000)
3. Go to address about and download no-ip client if your ISP uses dynamic IP addresses.
4. Create your site(s)

Walla! Nothing like rocket science.

You can also download and install WAMP (Windows - Apache, MySQL, PHP) which is a once installation thing. No complicated configuration required. Once its in, you reboot, open up your browser and type: http://localhost or 127.0.0.1 and if you see the WAMP-server homepahe, it worked!

When using WAMP or IIS, you need to configure your firewalls correctly for loop-back connections. You also need to know to install all your files into the default folder (or change the default folder in httpd.conf).

Hope this helps you and anyone needing the same sort of help as you!

Can you tell us if you are looking to run your server from home or are you looking to put it with an ISP (colocation)?

I would just recommend that you avoid all the hassles and just get a web hosting account from a company .

I second what hostdoom says,

if you are planing to host website do it from a hosting service, so you will get experience on managing your site, than seek as much info an setting up a server and a control panel will be highly recomemded like:
cpanel/whm

To be honest, its really not worth the trouble keeping your computer online 24x7, and chances are you are not allowed to even run servers on a retail line, regardless of the isp.

It would be worth it to just save up, and by a prepaid plan from a good web hosting provider that will take care of all the server side stuff, then you can just focus on your web site and not keeping your home "Server" up .
