Rather than asking such a basic broad question, how about telling us the methods you've tried, where you've seen success, and then see if that is in correlation to what others are doing.

Asking "how do you get traffic" is too broad of a question. It would be like me asking "how does a plane work". I can give you the basics that an engine powers the plane pushing air over the wings and that makes it fly - but there's more to it than just that.
 
Becoming a part of the social networking websites is one of the best ways of getting more traffic to the website. In order to get the best response, it is important to be receptive to the posts made by other people as well. Being social is the only thing that will help in building a stronger network.
 
The obvious ways:

Advertise via word of mouth.
Mail postcards to local businesses.
Buy small newspaper ads in local papers.
Post fliers at local community centers.

Advertise on facebook, twitter, and youtube.
Link swap with other websites.
 
Do said local methods work for online sites? I'm really curious as I've never tried it myself. I suspect this won't work for ecommerce based sites.

There are number of ways to attract traffic for your site like for example Pay per Click campaigns, posting a great content, back links and SEO.
 
Assuming it's for the business on your signature, the best way is either spend 1000s of dollars and do a PPC campaign all over the web or market your brand on a personal level. Approach businesses that might need your services, approach people in the industry, word of mouth is very powerful.
 
Growing your social media base is one of the most cost effective ways to market. you can market to those people over and over. its cheap, virtually free. And the same goes for email lists.
 
The best thing is to get top position in google via your keywords. If you will do that you will get not only traffic but also real customers.
 
There is no single way to get traffic to you site.
Try,
SEO, SEM, Forum posting, Blog posting, article writing, etc to get traffic from different sources and then find the one that works most for you and concentrate on it while finding better ways to improve traffic from other sources

When you ask broad questions, you tend to get broad answers. Most useful and best way are perceived differently across the industry, so if you share what you're trying now or have tried, we may be able to offer some insight on how to improve traffic to your site.

Are you doing split testing? Sometimes using different colors or rephrasing of offers makes a world of difference, especially for increasing inbound traffic into conversions.

How is your site different from those visitors just left? Lots of providers have FB, Twitter and other social media icons on their sites, but how well they interact with prospects on those sites makes a huge difference.

Are you chasing prospects with promotions and sales, or are they chasing you because they know, like and trust you? What are doing now online to make that happen?
