How to get a forum going good?

What are some tips to get a forum going good? I know, advertise, but what else could you do to promote it?

I have just started another forum, I think this one will pick up nicely, I have a few friends interested in helping out.. anyone have any tips?
 
Good moderators.
Get people that are interested in the subject of your site
Start posts on topics that will get people involved and interested
 
It doesnt matter what you do, unless you have a good comunity its hard to build any forum I think.
If you just get a few friends to signup and use it, as long as they are able to help others, chat about the topic and are friendly to newbies/new members then it would help start it off :)
 
Yeah you really need good mods and you also need to be an active player there. I like a good forum and that is why I chose this one in addition to a couple others. Just remember to say hello to everyone and be super friendly and you will do well.
It is easier to get one going if it seems semi active so even if it is just you and a couple others as long as you are posting frequently others will join, also keep the topics lively.
