many peoples find themselves asking how to be a successful web host
godaddy's domain was registered in 1999 i think the answer to most peoples question's is right there

i do believe 20 years from today my hosting company

patience is the key not high end advertisement ...

Good luck! This would have been much easier to achieve had you started 10 years ago but still, you have to start somewhere, right?

Probably best not to set such high goals though (multiple billions) as you're setting yourself up for defeat.

setting up for defeat?
i'll simply hire 1 million employee's and about 50 lawyers i'll be somewhere in califonia chilling in my mansion as my team run the day to day operations ;)

that's once i get too the billions of course

Of course patience is the key, while plus that you to have satisfied clients, you should a high quality service, affordable price and excellent support team.

You've watched too many Hollywood movies I'm afraid. If the answer is really in age, then how come I can find plenty of hosts with 10+ years of experience who are just...existing without gaining too many customers.
And, as mentioned, its way easier to make a fortune when you are a pioneer in some niche. You can try and start a hosting company right now and I guarantee you that the chances you become a millionaire in 10 years without significant investments along the way are pretty low (if I'm mistaking tho I hope I still get an invitation to one of your yacht parties) :rolleyes2

I personally don't think it is an achievable goal anymore as someone else mentioned perhaps 10 or so years go had you started then, maybe.

The market is oversaturated now, I'll be hppy simply if I can keep my existing client base happy, attract some new clientbase and make enough to at least pay the server bills etc.

I am fortunate enough to have a full time job so this is a hobby allbeit a serious hobby.

Yeah the first 4 years was rough, a couple years in between where nightmares. All in all I think we will all be rich once Godaddy chokes and we know they will.

way off the mark. i started in 1999 and in that time i am making a comfortable living, but no where near an unrealistic Multi-Billion business.
you do know that web hosting is not a get rich quick business. it take time and a lot of effort and money to build up a clientbase and good relationship with providers.

You better start setting yourself aside from the rest, then, because right now, your company is a dime a dozen. Do you have a plan to grow and have something unique that any other web host doesn't provide?
Godaddy made their name by being the first at selling cheap domain names and advertised the hell out of it. (Nascar advertising, TV advertising etc.) THAT's how they became big. Not because they had patience.

I believe in 20 years from now probably webhosting will be dead. If you started let's say 20 years ago, yes I believe it, but now there are too many web hosting companies...But again, everything is possible but don't think Hollywood is the same like reality. Good luck !!!

I wouldn't say web hosting is dead, but it will be very different, that's for sure.

You just have to think 20 and even 10 years back a small time host could never afford a VPS, now you can get a VPS for just as much as a reseller account, so i would say in a few years time Dedicated servers will be just as cheap

People would still need a "middle man", because I don't see people all of a sudden be so tech savvy that they could set up a dedicated server, no matter how easy to use the control panels are..
Control panels will get easier to use, but hackers will also get smarter..

In a way true, but just think at school now kids are becoming tech savvy earlier.
just look at how many 3 to 5yr olds now can work tables and iphones and these will the hosts of the future. yes some people will still not be tech savvy, but less that their is now, so less will need middle men

That's the thing - tablets/iphones at this point cannot really be compared to web hosting (still). Such technology like smartphones is getting easier and easier to use because they aim to cover a much, much bigger market. And with kids, they often fall into an environment where having these kinds of gadgets is more of a necessity, just so you don't fall behind your buddies with the trends. Much like PCs were some years ago.

With web hosts, you have all seen the tendency of more and more kids/teenagers trying to become web hosts, starting with a VPS/Reseller account somewhere. So its easy to enter this niche. Do they do it well? With very few exceptions I think we can all agree the answer is "No". This is because once you dip your toes into it you have to apply much more specific knowledge opposing to the general knowledge you need to operate a tablet (or getting a VPS somewhere).

While its fully possible that this specific knowledge will become more and available and comprehendable I see that taking much much time. For that time its more possible that the datacenters and not the end users will try to eliminate the "middle man" offering a much more complete service. :rolleyes2

the kids with tablets and iphones is just an example of how quick kids are becoming more tech savvy, kids are even learned on PC/laptops at an early age, with some schools even giving netbooks to the kids. yes i agree with a lot of kiddie hosts and the unlimited everything culture. just look at ebay you see unlimited everything reseller plans for $3 a year, so kiddies will get one of these and call themselves a web host. too many think webhosting is a get rich quick business

I am not on the same boat like you are. They think they know but they don't, it is like in our world now, just to impress. Those days most of the companies don't look for pros they are looking for politicians !!!

And they will be hacked in a minute e voila. Don't forget hackers and spammers are a necessity for big business in security . That's the problem with our world.

Humanity never, but never wanted to eliminate the cause not just the effect of the cause. Eliminating the cause you have no effect after, so problem solved, but business is not profitable.

It is a really shame !!!

i dont disagree with you, just saying kids are learning computer skills earlier these days, and because of that they get a cheap hosting plan and call themselves hosts. i like testing some of these so called hosts on ebay by asking simple questions to really see how much they know. i asked 1 of these about DNS and dedicated IPs and they did not know what i was taking about as they never heard of them before. It is these so called kiddie hosts that give the industry a bad name. you will be surprised at how many more appear on ebay during the UK six weeks summer holiday and vanish as soon as school starts again
