Hey,
Roughly, how much would a laptop cost in a shop on the states?
Im looking for something that will just do the things I want, something like:
1.5Ghz
256 RAM
graphics card (As long as I can play DVDs it doesnt matter what type :))
Hard disk about 20-30GB

Nothing which is top of the range, just want something portable that can do the job.
Thanks,
John

That shouldn't be much at all.. I would say nowhere near $1000 since I've seen real cheap ones in Canada.. and our money is less than US money.

Thanks Gordy, anyone from the states know a rought price for this?
I dont care about an OS with it, but most do come with windows anyway, even though it adds to the price

You could check a BestBuy or a FutureShop website, I think they are in the USA.

Actually, BestBuy may have bought out FutureShop..

John,

I can get you one for about $999 from work. I get a discount from IBM. Look at some of there laptops and let me know if you are interested.

Ok thanks Robert, asking because Im going over tomorrow and want to know if they are much cheaper over there.
I will be buying one soon anyway but thought I may as well get one while Im over if they are cheaper.

have you thought about insurance? Might be difficult to get repaired on insurance and so on if you buy it in a foreign country.

No I didnt think about that but to be honest, I would normally get someone else to do any repairs I need done but its a lot quicker.
I think it might be different with a laptop than a PC though because of the components involved, but Im not sure on that

John, you say you want a laptop?

I'd advise not getting it in the U.S.A., true, it may be cheaper, but don't. I'd advise getting a Medion laptop. The only two companies I've ever dealt with in my life are Medion and Quantex. Quantex I won't advise since they ended up being a front for money laundering. :D

But Medion is certainly worth a look. http://www.medion.com/
They are one of the biggest European suppliers, and don't concentrate their market in the U.S.A. - meaning they can give us Europeans better prices. :D
I've only ever dealt with, like I say Medion and Quantex. Whenever I phoned Medion, picked up on first ring. I have a laptop of theirs, brilliant it was. I'm going to get getting a new Medion desktop as you see in one of my other posts. I'm currently using my Quantex desktop because I gave away my laptop to someone who was going to Asia and needed one. The reason I'm getting to buy a brand new PC. :D

But for me, I found Medion was brilliant. Their support is top notch, their techs know what they are doing - none of this transferring to India or some other country where the techs aren't as knowledgable. Certainly a look at if you want a cheap PC but a quality one too. I've seen so many great prices for Medion in France and in Germany, that the U.K. prices have to be super as well.

You never said if you lived in Northern Ireland or the R.O.I, so I'm not sure which. Although if you live in Northern Ireland, give them a call. Off their site you request a quote, or ask them which shops sell their PCs. If you live in R.O.I., give 'em a call anyway. I use Medion now for all my PCs, laptops, staff PCs and laptops and also all workstations in the office. I've never had any problems with Medion. For me, and many others, they've been brilliant.

Although even if you don't go with Medion, your choice. But either way - I advise get a laptop in your own country or in the U.K., don't get it elsewhere. Many times the warrany is void and so on.
So I'd check out all your places first before you decide to go for one in the U.S.A. -> You may be surprised how cheap PCs can be in the U.K. or from Medion. Don't give up on local European companies, we need that Euro to be stronger! lol :D

I wouldnt buy any namebrand laptops unless you are going to go all out... otherwise you are going to get cheap parts... and a short life span on your machine.

We sell customer laptops here at work... where you tell us what you want and we build it for you. (In this case I would tell you where to get the parts for cheap... and you could build it yourself)

Specifications + Pricing:

Pentium 4 Mobile 2.2GHz Processor
256MB Memory
20GB hard drive
Wireless card
DVD Rom
CDRW burner
15" viewable
32mbit integrated video
100mbit lan
4 USB
2 Firewire
Windows XP Pro
Carrying case
$1,180

$715 pounds (quid) whatever you wanna call it.

I would guess a laptop you are looking for though... 1.5ghz and all would be in the ball park of $650-1000 depending on the brand.

FYI: Do not get a Sony, Compaq, HP, Dell machine.... support is horrible and any repair you may need they will say "There is water damage... the warranty is void" just because they're assholes.

Hey now.. thats crossing the line.. dad works for HP :P haha

<< Hey John. You left for the states yet? How long will you be gone? >>

I think he has left already. He said he'd leave on the 22nd and it is the 22nd today.

<< I wouldnt buy any namebrand laptops unless you are going to go all out... otherwise you are going to get cheap parts... and a short life span on your machine. >>

Vovex, this is very childish do you not think? Medion is a name brand product, I can assure that I have never had any problems with them, nor my staff and I've only used them and Quantex, as well I've never met anyone who has had problems with them or any other big name brand product such as Dell, FeaturedServers, HP, and so on. I have never even had any problems with Quantex except for the fact they turned out to be a front for money laundering. :p
You say later on in your post how you make computers yourself. I don't mean anything, but just because you make PCs as well does not mean you need to bash other good companies and it certainly by any means does not mean the computers you make are better than any others such as Medion, Dell, HP, etc.

<< In this case I would tell you where to get the parts for cheap... and you could build it yourself >>

Although above in your post you say that brands use cheap parts. I personally don't think Medion uses cheap parts by any means, although anyhow - above in your post you said don't use brand names because they use apparently cheap parts, yet you want to tell John where to get cheap parts.... I don't see the logic in this I'm afraid.

That Vovex, I'm afraid is somewhat childish, and you cannot say otherwise. Have you had experience with all of them? I don't think so, otherwise all I can say is you must be very rich to have been able to purchase such expensive makes. Another thing, they are not "a**holes" as you say, again I must ask, have you had experience with them? Although I do not know your experience with the companies, I'm afraid all I can say is your acting very immature when discussing about them. True, you may not like them due to the fact you also sell computers, but that does not mean for everyone else who actually did purchase something off them, that they are awful.

Anjay and Vovex you both provided info that should help me :)
Vovex, would it not be pretty hard to build your own laptop?
I thought it would be pretty difficult compared to a PC.

Anjay, Im in the North btw :) Will check out their site when I get back and most likely give them a ring if they seem good, glad you had a good experience with them, I think the best way of finding out about a company is to get info from someone who has used them before or still is.

I am in the states now btw, still finding time to come check out the board while on my holidays on christmas eve lol.
