How many spammers do you host ?

As a freewebhost it's almost impossible to keep track of every little thing that's on your server and with out question there will always be a spammer. How many accounts on a weekly basis are spammers on your server and how do you go about finding and removing these spammers.

At the moment I host 0spammers but on average I seem to get about 3per week and they all seem to sign up on Wednesdays...Spamers cause massive email problems to servers and are the fastest way to get you blacklisted when will the spamming end....

Never

I honestly don't see an end to spammers in the near future if ever. As long as there is money to be made, the spammers will flourish. I'm not sure you'll get any answers to your question, though, as I doubt there are very many hosts who will step up and say, "oh, yeah, I host 10 spammers"...lol. I don't think there are many who do this on purpose; they are usually unaware of the spammers.

They are the only ones that just may see an upside to the down falling economy.

This is a bit of a funny question. We don't offer a free package so it's not much of a problem; but I think for free hosts spammers are just a reality of the industry. They won't just go away, you have to keep them away. How? I have no idea other than weeding them out reactively, but I can't think of much of a proactive solution to spammers on free hosting. Do you use image verification at all? It seems to help forums keep spambots away at least.

Image verification does help but once the person has hold of there account information and form2mail it's an entire diff story.

Zero. We manually check every account that signs up :)

I'm not sure most hosts would want to admit to this either. It does seem that most free hosts that don't require manual acceptance have them sign up by the dozen daily. So long as they shut them down quickly its not too bad.

I guess each hosting company has its spammers who try to overload the server from time to time and whose accounts are suspended again na again.I think that it is impossible to win the gamer against spammers :)

To fight the spammers, try writing a script that will monitor the EXIM queue and as soon as a mail spike is detected, disable (& lock) the offending script's folder. This will save your server from sending out tens-of-tousands of spam emails.

I unknowingly hosted a spammer for a while. I had a site hosted on a server that I owned, I was hosting it for free for a friend who just needed a little site. Well one of her admins installed a script that was sending off little nasties....

The hosting company shut me down after about two days and I had to clean it all up so that I could get my site back.

Rarely have one in a few months.
You have too many spammers get on the server because you provide free hosting.
It's better to block sending mail from php scripts or limit number of emails per hour.

Currently none!

We do not approve od them!
Some are so game to come to live chat and ask to use their mums credit card, to ask if we allow rapidleech, and basically I know what they are getting at :) - DENIED!

he he :shh:

Hmm intersting. Sometimes that difficult to determine is they are spammers or not. Anyway that become clear once you get abuse.

Wasn't just that, he also asked how many outgoing emails they can send per hour. Also, he wanted 50MB Space and 100MB Bandwidth.

Basically sums it all up

With the proper utilities and limitations, by the time you'll have found out about the spammer, he would have barely had any time to make any mess.
